Position Summary
The Engineering Manager – Modular Factory is responsible for leading all engineering functions within a modular construction manufacturing facility. This role oversees design standardization, production engineering, structural integrity, and continuous improvement to ensure efficient, code-compliant, and cost-effective modular building solutions. The position serves as the critical link between design, estimating, procurement, and production teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering Leadership
- Lead and manage a team of structural, architectural, and MEP engineers/designers.
- Establish engineering standards, best practices, and design guidelines for modular construction.
- Oversee workload planning, staffing, and performance management of the engineering team.
- Design & Product Development
- Develop and maintain standardized modular designs and product platforms.
- Ensure all designs meet applicable building codes (IBC, IRC, state modular programs).
- Review and approve structural calculations, shop drawings, and engineered details.
- Drive design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) initiatives.
- Production & Manufacturing Support
- Collaborate with plant operations to optimize production workflows and reduce bottlenecks.
- Ensure engineering deliverables align with factory capabilities and sequencing.
- Support troubleshooting of production issues and implement corrective actions.
- Develop and maintain SOPs for engineering-to-production handoff.
- Structural & Systems Integrity
- Oversee structural design including chassis, floor systems, wall panels, and roof assemblies.
- Ensure load paths, connections, and transport conditions are fully engineered and documented.
- Validate MEP integration within modular constraints.
- Estimating & Preconstruction Support
- Partner with estimating teams to provide accurate engineering input and preliminary designs.
- Support value engineering efforts to optimize cost, materials, and constructability.
- Review project specifications and assist in proposal development.
- Compliance & Quality Assurance
- Ensure compliance with state modular programs, third-party inspections, and certifications.
- Maintain documentation for plan approvals and regulatory submissions.
- Support QA/QC processes and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Innovation & Continuous Improvement
- Implement new technologies, materials, and construction methods.
- Drive lean manufacturing principles within engineering workflows.
- Lead initiatives to reduce cost, improve quality, and shorten production cycle times.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Structural, Civil, Mechanical, or related field required).
- 7–12+ years of experience in modular construction, prefabrication, or related industry.
- 3–5+ years in a leadership or management role.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred (or ability to obtain).
- Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of structural design, load paths, and modular transportation constraints.
- Experience with CAD/BIM software (AutoCAD, Revit).
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes and production line optimization.
- Understanding of building codes (IBC, IRC) and modular compliance requirements.
