Job description

Engineering Manager – Automation & Robotics
  • Location: Charlotte, NC | On-Site
  • Direct Hire | Full Benefits

A growing industrial automation and robotics organization is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead its multidisciplinary engineering team in Charlotte, NC.

This is a high-impact leadership opportunity for someone with a strong background in industrial automation, robotics, automated material handling, AGVs, or systems integration who understands how complex automation projects move from initial design through installation and commissioning.

The Engineering Manager will oversee a team of approximately 10 Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls Engineers and will be responsible for engineering execution, team development, resource planning, project delivery, and continuous improvement.

This is primarily a leadership role rather than a hands-on design position. However, the ideal candidate will have enough technical depth in automation and controls to effectively lead engineers, challenge technical decisions, identify project risks, and help the team solve problems.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Lead, coach, and develop a multidisciplinary team of Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls Engineers
  • Manage engineering resources, priorities, workloads, and project deadlines across multiple customer projects
  • Drive projects from design and development through integration, testing, installation, commissioning, and customer acceptance
  • Partner closely with Project Management, Manufacturing, Sales, Applications Engineering, Supply Chain, Quality, and Service
  • Establish accountability around engineering schedules, deliverables, quality, and project execution
  • Support engineers in resolving complex mechanical, electrical, controls, and automation challenges
  • Improve engineering standards, processes, documentation, CAD practices, BOM management, and design controls
  • Reduce engineering rework and improve standardization across projects
  • Participate in customer design reviews, technical discussions, and project status meetings
  • Establish and monitor engineering KPIs related to productivity, schedule adherence, quality, and project performance
  • Support continuous improvement and Lean initiatives throughout the engineering organization
  • Develop engineering talent through coaching, performance management, training, and succession planning
What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of engineering management, supervision, or technical leadership experience
  • Strong background in industrial automation, robotics, automated material handling, AGVs, mobile equipment, or systems integration
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams, ideally including Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls Engineers
  • Experience delivering cradle-to-grave automation projects, including design, programming/controls, integration, testing, installation, commissioning, and startup
  • Strong understanding of PLC-based controls systems, with Allen-Bradley experience highly preferred
  • Working knowledge of CAD and engineering design/documentation systems
  • Experience with machine integration and commissioning
  • Ability to manage multiple complex customer projects simultaneously
  • Strong leadership, communication, accountability, and project management skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline preferred
  • Ability to travel approximately 30%
Highly Preferred
  • Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) experience
  • Robotics or autonomous/mobile automation experience
  • Experience working for an automation or systems integrator
  • SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD experience
  • Custom equipment or machine-building experience
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement
Why This Opportunity?

This is an opportunity to take ownership of an entire engineering function within a growing automation organization working with advanced robotics, AGV, and material-handling technology.

You'll have the ability to directly influence how the engineering department operates, develop a talented technical team, improve processes, and drive the successful execution of complex automation projects.

The position offers a $160,000–$180,000 base salary, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits, and significant visibility within the organization.
