Job summary

High Performance Technologies, Inc. (HPTech) seeks an Engineering Laboratory Safety Specialist to lead safety evaluations and plan assessments for about 15 labs at a government facility.

You will act as Master Safety Professional and QC Inspector, guiding hazard analyses and risk mitigation across multiple labs. You will prepare reports, templates, and training recommendations, coordinating with scientists, engineers, and facility staff to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and FHWA safety

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering, or related field.
• 10+ years of progressive safety experience in labs, facilities, or testing environments.
• CSP preferred; CIH/CSHM or equivalent considered.
• Experience performing JHAs, hazard assessments, audits, and risk analyses.
• Strong knowledge of OSHA and lab/industrial safety standards.
• Experience creating safety plans, SOPs, training, and safety programs.
• Ability to coordinate with scientists, engineers, technicians, and management.
• Excellent written, verbal, analytical, and interpersonal communication.

Responsibilities

HPTech has an immediate opening for an Engineering Laboratory Safety Specialist to support laboratory safety evaluation and safety plan assessment for about 15 indoor and outdoor engineering laboratories at a government facility. The selected individual will serve as the Master Safety Professional and Quality Control Inspector, providing technical leadership for the evaluation and improvement of laboratory safety programs across multiple engineering research laboratories and testing facilities.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the technical lead for laboratory safety evaluations and occupational safety assessments.
• Plan and conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for engineering laboratories, testing facilities, and associated work activities.
• Conduct laboratory walkthroughs to identify physical, chemical, mechanical, electrical, ergonomic, and operational hazards.
• Evaluate laboratory operations for compliance with OSHA regulations, applicable consensus standards, and the FHWA Occupational Safety and Health Management Manual.
• Review existing laboratory safety plans, standard operating procedures, emergency response procedures, hazard communication programs, PPE requirements, Safety Data Sheet (SDS) management practices, and laboratory-specific safety controls.
• Apply the hierarchy of hazard controls to develop practical and cost-effective engineering, administrative, and PPE-based risk mitigation recommendations.
• Prepare risk assessments, compliance evaluations, hazard‑control matrices, inspection reports, corrective action recommendations, and technical memoranda.
• Develop standardized laboratory safety plan templates that can be tailored to the operational needs and hazards of individual laboratories.
• Evaluate laboratory safety training programs and recommend role‑based training, certification, and competency requirements.
• Develop standardized inspection procedures, audit protocols, corrective action tracking processes, and continuous improvement recommendations.
• Coordinate closely with laboratory managers, facility managers, researchers, engineers, technicians, and safety personnel throughout the assessment process.
• Prepare technical presentations and briefings.
• Serve as the Quality Control Inspector by ensuring that all technical deliverables are accurate, complete, consistent, and fully compliant with the Government requirements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Environmental Health, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
• A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in occupational safety and health supporting engineering research laboratories, industrial research facilities, testing laboratories, manufacturing operations, government laboratories, or similar technical environments.
• Professional certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is strongly preferred. Other recognized certifications, such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM), or equivalent, will also be considered.
• Demonstrated experience conducting Job Hazard Analyses, hazard assessments, laboratory safety inspections, compliance audits, and risk assessments.
• Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations and standards applicable to laboratory and industrial operations, including hazard communication, chemical safety, machine safety, electrical safety, lockout/tagout, confined space, fall protection, personal protective equipment, hazardous materials management, and emergency preparedness.
• Experience developing or reviewing laboratory safety plans, standard operating procedures, inspection protocols, training programs, and safety management systems.
• Experience applying the hierarchy of hazard controls and risk‑based decision‑making to improve workplace safety.
• Experience preparing high-quality technical reports and recommendations for senior management.
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate and interact effectively with scientists, engineers, technicians, and management.
• Excellent written, verbal, analytical, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
