Engineering Lab Technician IV: $5,699 per month*

Engineering Lab Technician III: $5,109 per month*

Engineering Lab Technician II: $4,596 per month*

Engineering Lab Technician I: $4,214 per month*

* We're looking for someone with all types of knowledge and skill level related to Engineering Technology/Highway Construction skills to join our team! Salary is dependent on experience.

Materials Testing

• Lead the Department’s Independent Assurance program and support district materials operations.
• Perform and supervise tests on soils, aggregates, asphalt, bituminous mixes, and concrete to ensure compliance with AASHTO, ASTM, and NDDOT standards.
• Conduct Superpave mix design testing and analysis, including compaction, density, air voids, and ignition oven procedures.
• Calculate, evaluate, and report all engineering test results.
• Field & Laboratory Oversight

Field & Laboratory Oversight

• Supervise aggregate and bituminous field laboratories and perform Independent Assurance sampling and testing.
• Provide technical guidance to district and statewide testing personnel.
• Oversee sampling operations and ensure proper procedures and representative samples.

Equipment & Supply Management

• Maintain testing and engineering equipment and manage procurement of supplies for lab and field operations.
• Perform and interpret soil compaction tests following AASHTO procedures.
• Project Materials Analysis

Project Materials Analysis

• Determine project-specific material requirements based on specifications, plans, and testing manuals.
• Conduct sampling, comparison testing, and evaluation of project materials.
• Analyze data, plot results, and prepare detailed technical reports.
• Represent the District Lab at departmental meetings when needed.
• Testing Standards & Procedure Development

Testing Standards & Procedure Development

• Stay current with new and existing AASHTO and ASTM procedures and integrate updates into district practices.
• Identify equipment needs for new testing procedures.
• Conduct concrete and cement testing and prepare required reports.
• Training & Certification

Training & Certification

• Implement district training and support the NDDOT Transportation Technician Qualification Program.
• Train personnel on standardized testing procedures and conduct federally mandated proficiency exams.
• Maintain Level III certification and assist with administering technician performance examinations.

Minimum Qualifications

Engineering Lab Technician IV: 6+ years of related experience; engineering or related college coursework/degree may substitute on a year-for-year basis.

Engineering Lab Technician III: 4+ years of related experience; engineering or related college coursework/degree may substitute on a year-for-year basis.

Engineering Lab Technician II: 2+ years of related experience; engineering or related college coursework/degree may substitute on a year-for-year basis.

Engineering Lab Technician I: High school diploma or GED required with basic understanding of job-related concepts.

All Levels

• Ability to work outdoors in all weather and on uneven/slippery surfaces
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
• Valid North Dakota Class D driver’s license
• Material testing is preferred
• Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) reflecting the required abilities for this position may be substituted for the required work experience on a year-for-year basis. Related MOS codes include Horizontal Construction Engineer (12N), Geospatial Engineer (12Y), Technical Engineer (12T), and Engineering (3E5X1).

We are seeking candidates with a strong interest in construction and engineering, good organizational and communication skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
