Job summary

Heartland Food Products Group is seeking an Engineering Intern to support Sales, Engineering, Quality, Production and Research teams in Indianapolis. The role offers hands-on experience in production and improvement initiatives within a leading CPG environment.

You will work under supervision to ensure safety, quality and efficiency while developing practical skills in a real manufacturing setting for an hourly internship position.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (Engineering, Industrial Management, Business, Food Science or related).
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong attention to detail and organization.
  • Very task-oriented with good communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Follow food safety and SQF guidelines and HACCP principles.
  • Assist in coordinating production team activities (packers, machine operators, blenders).
  • Facilitate team meetings and drive day-to-day problem solving.
  • Coordinate inventories and cross-departmental activities.
  • Plan work schedules and production sequences to meet goals.
  • Inspect materials and equipment for defects and conformity.

Intern Professional-Hourly Indianapolis, IN, US

Scope:

Engineering Intern will be involved in work and/or research centered on key roles supported by Heartland FPG including Sales, Engineering, Quality, Production and Research. Interns could also have the opportunity to participate in client and consultant meetings as well as communication and research initiatives. Interns will have the opportunity to participate in and learn about production side of business.

Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities:
  • Utilizes all food safety and food security guidelines, including Safe Quality Foods (SQF) good manufacturing practices and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points.
  • Assist in coordinating the activities of the employees engaged in the production or processing of goods, such as packers, machine operators, and blenders.
  • Develops and motivates team to solve own day-to-day operational issues and achieve plant goals through ongoing communication and facilitation of team meetings.
  • Coordinates daily inventories and supplies and other operational activities within or between departments.
  • Plans and establishes work schedules, assignments, and production sequences to meet production goals.
  • Inspects materials, products, or equipment to detect defects or malfunctions.
  • Observes work and monitor gauges, dials, or other indicators to ensure that operators conform to production or processing standards.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Industrial Management, Business, Food Science or a related technical field
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Very task-oriented
  • Excellent critical thinking/problem solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to physically perform the functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Must be able to work seated using a computer and phone for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work extended hours, such as daily overtime and an occasional weekend
  • Must possess visual acuity to document company records
  • Continuous walking throughout plant and distribution center.
