MoDOT’s Geotechnical section is offering an engineering field intern position (Geotechnical Specialist) at the Central Laboratory in Jefferson City, MO. You will support planning and executing geotechnical investigations for structures, working under moderate supervision.

You will assist drilling crews, log borings, prepare soil samples, and learn to evaluate field and lab results for geotechnical reports using software such as Plog, gINT, KeyLAB, and Slide2.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
  • 35 credit hours or more? implies 30 credit hours completed toward current degree program.
  • Maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0.

Responsibilities

  • Assist geotechnical specialists and drilling crews during investigations for structures and roadways.
  • Learn logging borings, soil samples preparation, and testing in Central Laboratory.
  • Gain exposure to geotechnical software such as Plog, gINT, KeyLAB, Slide2.
  • Perform Atterberg limits, compaction, direct shear, consolidation, and unconfined compression tests.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

This position will be filled at a salary no higher than the posted maximum salary.

Job Location: Central Laboratory, 1617 Missouri Boulevard, Jefferson City, MO

This position is in the Geotechnical section of the Construction and Materials Division.

What you'll do:
  • Assist geotechnical specialists and drilling crews during geotechnical investigations for structures and roadways; gain exposure to developing and executing drilling plans for geotechnical investigations.
  • Learn the process of logging borings, collecting and preparing soil samples for testing in our Central Laboratory; gain exposure to performing field soil and rock tests on samples gathered.
  • Exposure to evaluating, organizing, and preparing field and laboratory test results for geotechnical reports, while gaining exposure to geotechnical software such as Plog, gINT, KeyLAB, Slide2, etc.
  • Perform Atterberg limits, compaction standards, direct shear tests, consolidation tests and unconfined compressive strength testing.
  • Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a relevant bachelor's or post-bachelor's degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
  • 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
  • Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.
Special Working Conditions:
  • This position will work Monday - Thursday and have weekly overnight travel, except for 3 weeks for initial safety training and laboratory experience. Hotels, per-diem and a vehicle will be provided for all travel.
  • Job requires heavy physical exertion and effort.
  • This position will work primarily outside and will require exposure to all outdoor elements.
