Job summary

The State of Missouri is seeking two engineering field office interns (Construction Inspector) to support inspection and testing activities in Jefferson City. Work includes reviewing specifications, performing take-offs, creating spreadsheets, and assisting with field testing under supervision.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
• 30 credit hours completed toward the current degree program; transcripts may be required.
• GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Assist Field Office staff; help with testing for research; collect field samples; review specifications and standards; create spreadsheets.
• Coordinate inspections to verify contractor conformance with contracts and engineering standards.
• Perform measurements and calculations for plans, change orders, and cost estimates.
• Maintain construction documentation and reports; inform supervisor of progress and issues.
• Provide field checks for surveying operations; assist with staking and instrument operation on large projects.

What You’ll Do

• Support the Field Office staff as needed. Typical duties include: assisting with testing required for research, obtaining samples from the field, reviewing specifications and standards, calculating take-offs, and creating spreadsheets as assigned.
• Coordinates and performs construction inspections verifying that contractors' activities are in compliance with contracts, specifications, and engineering principles.
• Performs measurements, computations, or other work in preparing final plans, change orders, contractor payment estimates, and engineering costs.
• Maintains required construction documentation, records and files; prepares progress and other reports, keeps supervisor fully informed as to activities or unusual conditions on the job.
• Provides field checks for contractor surveying operations; serves as party chief on routine layout and staking; serves as instrument operator on staking of large bridges, other critical structures, or complex interchanges.

Minimum Qualifications

All you need for success:

• Currently enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
• 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
• Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.

Special Working Conditions

• This is a wage, non-benefits eligible position, working no more than 1,039 hours per year.
• The typical working hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
• Job requires moderate physical activity.
• Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
