Job summary

Yale NewHaven Health is seeking a senior facilities engineering leader to manage the Plumbing and Mechanical Sections and Plant Operations staff responsible for HVAC, plumbing, and related systems. You will oversee budgets, preventive maintenance, and project installations across boilers, chillers, and medical gas equipment.

Ideal candidates have at least five years of supervisory experience, a BS in mechanical engineering, and strong skills in blueprint reading, communications, and software

Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred; equivalent experience in facilities engineering, plant operations, or mechanical systems management may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of five years of supervisory experience in mechanical and plumbing trades required.
  • Ability to read blueprints and modify HVAC, mechanical, plumbing and medical gas systems.
  • Strong communications and managerial skills; experience with multiple computer software applications.

Responsibilities

  • Tracks and monitors the shop's monthly financials for budgetary compliance and cash flow modification.
  • Manages and inspects the work of Mechanics; provides periodic reports on section activities.
  • Establishes programs for preventive maintenance and equipment monitoring, including boilers, chillers, USTs, maintenance contracts, and air and water balancing.
  • Reviews problems across HVAC, Mechanical, Plumbing, Medical Gas, and Plant sections; informs Director of corrective actions.
  • Recommends items for annual capital budget requests; oversees some equipment and capital project installations.
  • Oversees Maintenance & Plant service contracts.
  • Monitors staff efficiency to reduce salary and overtime costs.
  • Ensures personnel adherence to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participates in site inspections with insurance carriers, Fire Marshal, and others as needed.
  • Ensures environmental conditions meet comfort and health standards; conducts environmental rounds for regulatory compliance.
  • Assists in energy usage development for HVAC and mechanical systems.
  • Directly manages Plant Operators and coordinates with Chief Plant Operator for system availability.
  • Participates in selection and training of employees; conducts performance appraisals and handles personnel actions.

Manages the programs and work efforts of the Plumbing and Mechanical Sections and Plant Operations staff responsible for the maintenance, installation, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), mechanical equipment, refrigeration, plumbing, piping, fire sprinkler, medical gas, tube, and power plant systems. Shares responsibility for the hospital's energy management and conservation programs, serves in the Director's absence as needed, and oversees the review of designs and monitoring of installations for HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, fire sprinkler, medical gas, and power plant systems during construction projects.

Responsibilities


  • 1. Tracks and monitors the shop's monthly financials for budgetary compliance, appropriate allocation and necessary cash flow modification.

  • 2. Manages and inspects the work efforts of all Mechanics, Provides periodic reports on each of the section's activities.

  • 3. Establishes programs and coordinates such programs for providing preventive maintenance and equipment monitoring including the management of boilers, chillers, UST's, maintenance contracts, air and water balancing, pneumatic and electrical controls, oxygen deliveries, maintenance, steam trap testing and repair, main valve testing, and general service of a variety of air conditioning, refrigeration units, and general utility systems, including all mechanical, plumbing, sprinkler and med gas equipment.

  • 4. Reviews problems of the HVAC, Mechanical, Plumbing, Medical Gas and Plant sections and keeps Director informed of corrective actions taken.

  • 5. Makes recommendations pertaining to annual capital budget requests. Oversees equipment and some Capital Project installations directly.

  • 6. Oversees Maintenance & Plant service contracts.

  • 7. Monitors staff efficiency to reduce salary and overtime costs.

  • 8. Ensures that all assigned personnel follow departmental policies and procedures.

  • 9. Participates in various site inspections throughout the hospital complex with insurance carriers, Fire Marshal and others as needed

  • 10. Ensures that environmental conditions within the hospital comply with accepted standards of comfort and health. Conducts regular Environmental rounds to help ensure compliance with Regulatory standards.

  • 11. Assists in the development and implementation of energy usage for all HVAC and mechanical systems.

  • 12. Directly manages the Plant Operators and works with Chief Plant Operator to ensure ongoing availability of all utility systems

  • 13. Participates in the selection and training of employees and ensures that performance appraisals that he conducts are done in a fair and equitable manner. Handles employee issues with appropriate actions, as well as his recommendations and responsibilities for promotions, transfers, wage changes and terminations.

EXPERIENCE


A minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience in mechanical and plumbing trades required.


SPECIAL SKILLS


Ability to read blueprints and modify HVAC, mechanical, plumbing and medical gas systems. Strong communications skills and managerial skills required. Experienced with multiple computer software applications.


PHYSICAL DEMAND


Works in and around mechanical equipment on roofs, above ceilings, in construction areas.
