Yale New Haven Health in New Haven, CT is seeking an HVAC mechanic to support installation, service and maintenance of critical facility systems under the Manager of Mechanical Systems. The role requires assisting in repairs of electrical and electromechanical equipment to ensure safe, reliable operations across hospital infrastructure.

You will respond to service calls and emergencies, log activities in CMMS, and work with staff and contractors to maintain uninterrupted operations.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED; some trade school preferred.
  • Experience: 3–6 months hands-on HVAC/Refrigeration, plumbing or mechanical preferred.
  • Licensure: Valid Driver's License with clean record.
  • Special skills: Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems; good record-keeping; computer skills.
  • Physical: ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, work in various areas and weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist HVAC or Mechanic Leadsperson in upkeep of mechanical systems equipment.
  • Conduct equipment rounds and document findings; notify Leadman of contractor movements.
  • Repair defective equipment when feasible or log for follow-up.
  • Respond to service calls, alarms, and emergencies per safety standards.
  • Maintain CMMS logs and coordinate with staff and contractors.

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Mechanical Systems, aids in the installation, service and maintenance of mechanical systems equipment. Assists in the repairs of electrical and electromechanical equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of critical facility infrastructure. Logs all work-related activities using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Responds to service calls, alarms, and emergency situations as required while maintaining compliance with safety, regulatory, and departmental standards. Works collaboratively with staff, contractors, and other departments to support uninterrupted facility operations and a high level of customer service. This is NOT an Apprenticeship position.

Responsibilities
  • 1. General
    • 1.1 Assist the HVAC or Mechanic Leadsperson as directed by the Department Manager, based on departmental operational needs for the upkeep of mechanical systems equipment and associated areas
  • 2. Technical Functions
    • 2.1 Conducts equipment rounds and documents all appropriate findings. Notifies the Leadman if any contractors have moved into a mechanical or equipment room. Any defective equipment identified during rounds must be repaired when feasible or documented in the logbook and on the shop status board for follow-up.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

Position requires high school graduation or GED, Some trade school preferred. Including or supplemented by technical courses in electricity, electronics, machinery or equivalent on the job training.

EXPERIENCE

Trade school or formal on the job training plus three (3) to six (6) months of hands-on experience in HVAC/Refrigeration, plumbing or mechanical preferred.

LICENSURE

Valid Driver's License with a clean record.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems. Works independently with appropriate supervision. Keep accurate records on time and material used. Computer skills are required.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Ability to lift and transport equipment weighing up to 50lbs. Ability to climb ladders up to 30 feet, and work in high places. Work in mechanical areas and on roofs in all weather conditions. Assist in snow removal. Work in patient rooms and various public areas. Work with hazardous materials and chemicals, with proper precautions. Ability to work independently. This is NOT an apprenticeship position.
