Job summary

KCI Technologies, Inc. in Sparks, MD is seeking an Engineering Designer to create drawings for transportation projects. You will work under a Professional Engineer, performing drafting, calculations, and coordination across disciplines using OpenRoads, MicroStation, and AutoCAD.

The role requires a 2+ year background, ABET-accredited engineering degree, and strong MS Word/Excel skills. Travel for site visits and collaboration with teams are expected.

Qualifications

  • Conduct site visits to gather data (measurements, sketches, notes, photographs).
  • Prepare design calculations, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for review and approval.
  • Review and approve shop drawings to ensure project requirements are met.
  • Read and interpret technical documents necessary for job performance.
  • Attend project meetings to discuss progress and tasks.
  • Ensure ISO compliance and operation within budget parameters.
  • Complete tasks on time and meet project scope.

Duties, Responsibilities & Other

The Engineering Designer will design and prepare drawings for various transportation projects. The Engineering Designer will work closely under the supervision of a Professional Engineer, contributing to engineering calculations, drafting, and coordination of multiple engineering disciplines. This role requires knowledge of engineering principles, relevant design software such as OpenRoads, MicroStation and AutoCAD, and strong communication, technical writing skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop design and prepare drawings for a variety of projects.
  • Perform engineering calculations, interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Assist with proposal preparation including scope, schedule and fee, contract management and billing.
  • Coordinate and work with multiple engineering disciplines and perform drafting/CADD work.
  • Conduct site visits to gather data, including measurements, sketches, notes, and photographs.
  • Prepare design calculations, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for review and approval.
  • Review and approve shop drawings and ensure they meet project requirements.
  • Read and interpret technical documents necessary for job performance.
  • Consult and coordinate with other practices and sub‑consultants as required to ensure project success.
  • Attend bi‑weekly (or more frequent, as necessary) meetings with the project team to discuss project progress and tasks.
  • Ensure that all projects fulfill ISO compliance requirements and operate within specified budget parameters.
  • Complete all tasks on time and within budget while fully meeting project scope.
  • Achieve or exceed budgeted individual utilization targets.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures.
  • Complete other duties as required or assigned.
