Job summary

The D.S. Brown Company, a Gibraltar Industries Company, is seeking a Fall 2026 Engineering Co‑Op in North Baltimore, Ohio.

This on‑site program offers hands‑on exposure to Engineering, Estimating, Operations, and Purchasing/Planning through structured rotations across the full product life cycle. You will rotate through three terms, starting in Engineering and Operations, with a third term you choose (Engineering, Operations, or Estimating).

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in relevant engineering fields with strong academic performance.
  • Experience with CAD tools (AutoCAD or SolidWorks) preferred.
  • Willingness to participate in multi-term cooperative rotations.

Responsibilities

  • Support engineering design reviews and project planning.
  • Shadow engineers and participate in cross-functional rotations.
  • Contribute to purchasing/planning and estimating rotations.
  • Assist with shop floor observations and production processes.
  • Engage in safety, quality, and process improvement discussions.

The D.S. Brown Company’s Engineering Co-Op Program is structured to provide hands‑on exposure to the full product life cycle through intentional term rotations in Engineering, Estimating, Operations, & Purchasing/Planning to strengthen their understanding of how product design impacts manufacturability, material requirements, and production outcomes.

This cross-functional structure enables students to contribute to departmental priorities while gaining real‑world understanding into how products move from concept and design, to production, and ultimately through the planning and supply chain processes that support them.

We are looking for a co‑op for Fall 2026. This is an on‑site position located in North Baltimore, OH.

What You'll Do
Engineering Co‑Op Program Structure:

This program is structured to encourage multiple terms.

1st Term: Engineering
  • Estimating (2 Weeks)
    • Shadow Estimating Technicians to learn the cost‑estimating process
    • Learn how RFI’s are used to clarify missing or unclear information
    • Support entry‑level engineering tasks and assist in design
    • Gain insight into how estimating decisions influence schedules, pricing, and project feasibility
    • Spend time on the shop floor to receive a better understanding of what is going on
  • Engineering (13 Weeks)
    • Shadow engineers during design reviews and project planning
    • Learn how drawings and specs translate to production
    • Support entry‑level engineering tasks and assist in design
    • Participate in problem‑solving or continuous improvement discussions
    • Attend a supplier, customer, or site visit
2nd Term: Operations
  • Purchasing/Planning (2 Weeks)
    • Shadow Production Planners, Buyers, & the Supply Chain Manager
    • Observe vendor communication and tracking orders
    • Learn how lead times impact production schedules
    • Review Historical data for MRD
    • Learn Process for establishing inventory controls & understanding material requirements
  • Operations (13 Weeks)
    • Tour and shadow in each production area – highlight production operations
    • Operate select machines
    • Observe products from start to finish
    • Review process outputs vs schedule
    • Participate in safety, quality, and process improvement discussions
    • Learn how engineering decisions affect manufacturing processes and efficiency
3rd Term – Your Choice:

The co‑op has the opportunity to continue building on their prior term rotation experiences by choosing an area of focus based on interests and career goals.

A. Engineering, B. Operations, or C. Estimating
  • 3rd Term A: Engineering (15 Weeks)
    • Apply and leverage the product, manufacturing, and cross‑functional knowledge gained in prior rotations to support more advanced engineering work, project execution, and problem‑solving initiatives.
      • Perform project engineering duties and tasks
      • Assist with drawing updates and project planning
      • Participate in design reviews, project meetings, and cross‑functional discussions
  • 3rd Term B: Operations (15 Weeks)
    • Apply and leverage engineering fundamentals and prior operational exposure to support manufacturing processes and take greater responsibility and ownership of operational initiatives within the plant.
      • Support daily production operations with ownership of assigned areas or initiatives for processes
      • Participate in root cause analysis, continuous improvement discussions, or safety initiatives
      • Collaborate with Maintenance and Production teams on operational priorities
  • 3rd Term C: Estimating (15 Weeks)
    • Apply and leverage engineering and operational exposure gained in prior rotations to strengthen estimating knowledge and skills in support of developing accurate and informed project cost estimates.
      • Identify takeoff, design as necessary, and participate in the cost‑estimating process
      • Forward requests for information RFI’s are required to customers and/or owners for items that are not clear but can affect overall costs
      • Interact with Supervisors and other departments on unusual products to ensure all cost factors have been account for and that customer schedules can be met
      • Obtain pricing for material from necessary subcontractors

Rotations are structured in this order to ensure a clear and meaningful learning progression.

In addition to the accountabilities listed above, individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including work in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.

What We Need
Education/Experience:

Degree: Bachelors (In Progress) Major: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, & Industrial Engineering

Technical Skills:

  • Experience using AutoCAD, SolidWorks preferred
  • Good geometry and trigonometry skills
  • Basic understanding of how products are purchased, machined, fabricated
Physical Requirements

(Approximate time spent to be included in physical demands such as walking, or bending, specific lifting requirements and/or other requirements such as vision or hearing)

  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. on a continuous basis
  • Manually push and pull material/product
