Job description

The San Joaquin County Public Works Department is recruiting to fill one full-time Engineering Assistant I vacancy and to establish an eligible list which may be used to fill future vacancies. Pre-Employment Drug Screening and Background: Potential new hires into this classification are required to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and a background investigation as a condition of employment. The role requires proficiency in modern office automation technology and computer software, along with the ability to learn new computer applications and direct the work of others. Effective communication and maintaining positive relationships with coworkers and the public are essential. Physical duties include frequent sitting, standing, lifting, and exposure to construction noise and varied weather conditions, while handling stressful situations and making decisions under pressure.

  • Prepares and reviews maps, right-of-way deeds and legal descriptions; calculates and plots the results of field surveys; and locates, sets or resets survey points.

  • Writes engineering specifications for proposed projects; makes estimates for projects planned or under construction; drafts engineering reports; assists in the application of principles of engineering design and theory to assigned projects.

  • May act as resident engineer for projects under contract such as roads; sanitation, drainage and water systems; buildings and other facilities.

  • May serve as a lead worker or supervise a field crew; may monitor field activities and work production; may instruct subordinate staff to make corrections or modifications to ensure compliance with standards and regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE

Basic principles and practices of engineering and materials, including physics, mathematics, chemistry, drafting, real property description, surveying, design, construction, hydraulics and mechanics; basic computer and modern office automation technology, including pertinent software; principles of supervision.

ABILITY

Apply required engineering knowledge in varied work assignments; train and direct others; learn to perform a wide variety of computer applications; operate computers and related software; direct the work of others; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
