Job description

Salary Range

Engineer VI, EN-28: $10,285.00 - $13,128.00 per month. This is the posted salary range; new hires typically begin at the initial step. Current Hawaii State Department of Education employees are placed per state regulations and collective bargaining agreements.

Examples of Duties
  • Supervises the professional and nonprofessional personnel of a major engineering activity.
  • Develops procedures and standards for carrying out specialty in the organization and represents the organization with authority on technical engineering matters.
  • Directs or assists in directing a large engineering section or division, or district office as a technical specialist in planning, development, design, and/or research.
  • Leads the efforts of a team engaged in difficult or critical project assignments with emphasis in the area of specialization.
  • Serves as a staff specialist responsible for control and coordination of major and complex engineering projects or programs.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Basic Education/Experience Requirements – All applicants must meet one of the following:
    • Graduation from an accredited college or university engineering school. Degrees in physics, mathematics, or chemistry may be accepted if accompanied by at least 15 credits in engineering sciences.
    • Administrative, professional, or technical experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, covering physics, chemistry, mathematics, and engineering sciences.
    • A combination of college training and relevant experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • Experience Requirements – Progressive, responsible experience as follows:
    • Engineer VI: 4 years of engineering experience, with at least one year comparable to the next lower level.
  • Engineering Experience – Professional engineering work that applied physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences to solve theoretical or practical problems. Examples include design of machines and systems, original research, administration of engineering projects, interpretation of operational requirements, and evaluation of engineering projects.
  • Substitutions Allowed
    • Master’s degree may substitute one year of engineering experience.
    • Excess supervisory, staff advisory, or administrative experience may substitute for engineering experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Professional Engineering License Requirement – For Engineer IV and higher, a valid Hawaii State Certificate of Registration as a professional engineer is required.
  • Driver's License Requirement – A current, valid driver's license is required.

The advertised salary includes full‑time employment and may incorporate shortage and school year differentials.
