Hawaii State Department of Education is seeking an Engineer VI to supervise a major engineering activity and lead a team in planning, design and research. The role requires applying engineering science principles and directing multi-disciplinary efforts to meet program goals.
Qualified candidates will have an engineering degree and at least 5 years of progressive engineering experience, including supervisory responsibilities, with required credentials as applicable by Hawaii regulations.
Salary Range: The posted salary range indicates potential compensation, not necessarily starting salary. New external hires typically begin at the initial step. Placement above the initial step may be considered based on position requirements, exceptional qualifications, budget availability, and other relevant factors, all requiring prior approval. Current Hawaii State Department of Education employees will be placed according to Department regulations and applicable collective bargaining agreements.
Engineer VI, EN-28: $10,588.00 - $13,515.00 per month

Except for the substitutions provided for in this specification, applicants must have had progressively responsible experience of the kind and quality described below and in the amounts shown in the following table:
*For the Engineer VI level, at least one year of the required engineering experience must have been experience comparable to the next lower level.
**Administrative Experience: Professional engineering experience which included the planning (including budget planning and justification), organizing, staffing, policy formulation and implementation of same and directing a program providing staff services and/or assistance.
Progressively responsible professional engineering which required the knowledge and application of the basic physical and mathematical sciences and the engineering sciences to the solution of theoretical or practical engineering problems.
Examples of qualifying professional engineering experience are as follows:
Note: In some situations, experience which is not of itself clearly professional engineering experience may be accepted in lieu of "professional" engineering experience. In such cases, the experience must have been preceded by prior "professional" engineering experience and must contribute directly and significantly to the candidate's professional engineering competence. For example, an engineer may be assigned to a management or a computer systems analysis position in preparation for assumption of higher-level responsibilities in engineering administration.
For the Engineer VI level, at least one year of the required engineering experience must have been experience comparable to the next lower level. In any case, the required amount of experience for any level will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification. The applicant's record of experience and education must show that applicant has the ability to perform efficiently the duties of the position.
For the Engineer IV and higher levels, applicants must possess a Hawaii State Certificate of Registration as a professional engineer.
Applicant must have a current, valid driver's license.
The advertised salary is based on full-time employment and includes shortage and school year differentials, if applicable.
Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified. Unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks. Part-time experience is pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours/week is equivalent to six months of experience, not one year. Also, hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours/week is equivalent to one year of experience, not one and a half years.
