General Dynamics Electric Boat is seeking a qualified engineer to support onboarding of a new supplier in the Welding & NDT Engineering – Suppliers and Strategic Sourcing group. The role involves on-site support to the supplier developing NAVSEA technical publications for welding and assisting in qualifying welding procedures.

Ideal candidates hold a B.S. in engineering with 5+ years of post-graduate experience, and prefer a background in materials science or welding engineering, plus

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in engineering.
  • 5+ years of post graduate related engineering experience.
  • Preferred: degree in Materials Science or Welding Engineering.
  • Three or more years of engineering experience in aerospace, defense, heavy fabrication or shipbuilding applications.
  • Ability to read and understand component specifications, military specifications and engineering drawings.
  • Experience with the development and qualification of weld procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated on-site support to supplier developing NAVSEA Technical Publication welding program.
  • Support supplier in qualifying new welding procedures and reviewing/approving welding procedures.
  • Offer insight and guidance in the development of quality procedures that support welding program.
  • Provide direct oversight and continued assessment of supplier weld program performance.
  • Provide technical guidance related to construction support, problem resolution and corrective actions for welding performed by supplier.
  • Maintain company standards, procedures, best practices, and process improvements in welding.

Overview

Department 341 Welding & NDT Engineering – Suppliers and Strategic Sourcing is looking for an additional team member to support onboarding of a new supplier.

Basic job responsibilities include:

  • Provide dedicated on-site support to supplier developing NAVSEA Technical Publication welding program.
  • Support supplier in qualifying new welding procedures
  • Review and approve supplier welding procedures
  • Offer insight and guidance in the development of quality procedures that support welding program
  • Provide direct oversight and continued assessment of supplier weld program performance
  • Provide technical guidance and expertise with respect to construction support, problem resolution and corrective actions for welding performed by supplier
  • Maintain company standards, procedures, best practices, and process improvements in the field of welding
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in engineering
  • 5+ years of post graduate related engineering experience

Preferred:

  • Degree in Materials Science or Welding Engineering
  • Three or more years of engineering experience in aerospace, defense, heavy fabrication or shipbuilding applications
  • The ability to read and understand component specifications, military specifications and engineering drawings
  • Experience working with basic arc welding processes and an understanding of the fundamentals of welding metallurgy
  • Experience with the development and qualification of weld procedures

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate with both a technical and nontechnical audience
  • Candidate must be highly motivated, perform independently, as well as interact with other groups and organizations, including interfacing regularly with SUPSHIP or NAVSEA customers, in an engineering environment
