Job Description
Facilities Development and Management, FM Research Facilities Services, MacroTechnology Works (MTW), seeks an experienced Senior Engineer - Mechanical Piping focused on piping systems to assist in the operation of the MTW semiconductor research facility. This position will play a substantial role in the design, operations and maintenance of a number of complex systems including chilled water loops, clean dry air systems, process vacuum systems, high purity water plant, industrial waste systems, and facility gas distribution systems. This role ensures the availability, reliability and capacity of mechanical systems that support the semiconductor research cleanrooms, labs and offices at MTW.
About MacroTechnology Works
MacroTechnology Works (MTW) is an advanced state-of-the‑art semiconductor research facility located in the ASU Research Park in southeastern Tempe. MTW provides ASU researchers, private industry researchers, partner companies and start‑up operations with office, lab, and cleanroom space appropriate to advance research into semiconductor related processes from basic material research to advanced semiconductor processing.
Essential Duties
- Monitor the operation and design of mechanical systems that support the cleanrooms, labs, and tools. This includes, but is not limited to, Process Vacuum Systems, Clean Dry Air Systems, Process Cooling Water Systems, High Purity Water Systems, Chillers, Boilers, Industrial Waste Systems, and gas distribution systems.
- Coordinate with outside entities and key stakeholders at ASU Research Park.
- Review and evaluate standard specifications and details used in other jurisdictions for possible adoption by the University.
- Consult with and advise inspectors regarding mechanical problems encountered during construction of major projects.
- Attend final inspections and recommend acceptance or rejection of completed work.
- Provide technical advice to management and staff.
- Formulate standard specification language or mechanical construction projects. Represents the University on panels and boards as needed.
- Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

Days and Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. May be required to work extended daily or weekend hours depending on activities at site.
Location
This position is based at ASU’s MacroTechnology Work’s site and may require working from other campuses depending on operational needs.
Position Salary Range
$140,000 to $150,000 annually. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.
Desired Qualifications
- Ten (10) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field. Professional Engineering Registration in the State of Arizona or the ability to obtain within six months of hire. Master’s degree in mechanical engineering.
- Evidence of: Troubleshoot and diagnose piping distribution systems to assess and modify or adjust to achieve maximum efficiency.
- Establish and track overall site capacities and work with management to plan timely upgrades.
- Effective communication skills
Experience in
- Facilities Operational Engineering role in an advanced semiconductor cleanroom (class 10/100, ISO Class 4/5).
- Consulting experience in the design of advanced technology facilities.
- Developing RFPs/RFQs (request for proposal/quote).
- Advanced semiconductor cleanrooms and laboratory operations.
- Mechanical systems that operate cleanrooms and labs.
- Maintaining, updating, and points of connections from capacity tracking databases.
- Coordinating flow measurement studies and reviewing results to manage facility capacities.
- Conducting design reviews of facility hydraulic distribution systems for site improvement and tool installation projects.
- Providing recommendations on necessary piping system improvements and developing long-term reliability plans.
- AutoCAD and drawing database.
Knowledge of
- Principles of operation of cleanrooms and mechanical systems.
- Local, state and federal codes, regulation and mandates- especially building codes and mechanical codes.
- H5 semiconductor regulations.
Ability to
- troubleshoot and diagnose syst
