Job summary

The City of Virginia Beach seeks a licensed professional engineer to join the Public Works Facilities Design & Construction Division. The role focuses on managing building design and construction services, coordinating with City staff and review agencies, and overseeing contracts from design through closeout.

Qualifications

Job description

This advertisement will fill a position in the Public Works Facilities Design & Construction Division.

This division provides project management services to implement the City's Capital Improvement Program for building construction and major renovation projects via contractual procurement for design and construction services.

Duties include the selection of architectural and engineering services; negotiations of design services and evaluation of design fees; coordination of the design effort among City staff members and various review agencies during schematic, design development, and construction document phases; management of the bidding and award process; coordination of the construction administration phase; and completion of the fiscal closeout of design and construction contracts.

This position will perform a variety of project management duties that include but are not limited to:

• Project management for building design and construction services
• Design and review of construction and major renovation project plans and specifications
• Prepare and review cost estimates and monitor project expenditures
• Administer construction and engineering contracts
• Review project plans for proper work sequencing, quality, and cost control
• Coordinate with City departments and outside agencies
• Communicate with City departments and the public
• Conduct field assessments and related work as required

Engineering work will entail a considerable number of independent actions or decisions on designs, project management and operations, and regular assignments of specialized engineering and project tasks. These tasks will support the implementation of the City's facilities construction program and will include program and project tracking, and reporting, managing, and analyzing data to evaluate progress.

Minimum Qualifications: Requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related field with possession of a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license from the Virginia Board of Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA) and five years of progressive professional experience.
