Nutrien Kennewick is seeking a highly organized Chemical Engineer to lead process safety activities, engineering analyses, and performance optimization at our Washington site. Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Promote safety culture and participate in safety programs.
  • Provide technical leadership in process safety activities (PHAs, MOCs, PSSRs, SIL reviews, RCAs, TapRooR investigations).
  • Deliver engineering analyses, process modeling, troubleshooting, and risk-based recommendations.
  • Maintain design documentation and engineering standards (P&IDs, relief systems, equipment records).
  • Monitor process data to identify optimization and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Support operations by resolving plant upsets and developing debottleneck strategies.
  • Lead projects, outages, maintenance activities, and capital investments.

Our Nutrien Kennewick site is looking for a highly organized professional with strong problem-solving, project management, and analytical skills. The ideal candidate is a proactive team player with excellent communication skills, a strong work ethic, and the ability to turn data-driven insights into action. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, is required.

This position is located at Nutrien's Kennewick, Washington site and is not available for remote work.

What You'll Do:
  • Promote a strong safety culture through active participation in site safety, environmental, and process safety programs.
  • Provide technical leadership in process safety activities, including PHAs, MOCs, PSSRs, SIL reviews, RCAs, and TapRoot investigations.
  • Deliver engineering analyses, process modeling, troubleshooting, and risk-based recommendations to support safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
  • Maintain process design documentation and engineering standards, including P&IDs, relief systems, equipment records, and operational limits.
  • Monitor and analyze process performance data to identify opportunities for optimization, risk reduction, and continuous improvement.
  • Support operations by resolving plant upsets, investigating production issues, and developing long-term debottleneck and improvement strategies.
  • Lead and support projects, outages, maintenance activities, and capital investments, including catalyst change-outs, exchanger cleaning, and equipment upgrades.
  • Develop and evaluate process design alternatives for Utilities, Ammonia, and Urea systems.
  • Contribute to budget planning, cost performance analysis, and equipment lifecycle management.
  • Support the development and review of operating procedures while providing technical guidance to operations and maintenance teams.
  • Build technical capability through mentoring, training, and collaboration across engineering disciplines.
  • Communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively to stakeholders, balancing confidence with sound risk awareness.
What You'll Bring:
  • Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering is required
  • 5+ years of experience in chemical processing is preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge and practical experience in product/process development, laboratory techniques, pilot plant equipment operations and identification of opportunities for improvements
  • Firm foundation in chemistry and mathematics
  • Experience/knowledge in the agricultural chemical manufacturing business is preferred, but not required

The salary range for this role, in Kennewick, Washington is between $95,700 - $150,370 USD/year. While we provide this range as general guidance, several factors are taken into consideration when making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, candidate skill set, experience and training, licensure and certifications, work location, and other business and organizational needs. Actual salary and benefits may differ based upon location.

In addition to base pay, this role is also eligible to participate in our annual incentive plan and long-term incentive plan, consistent with the terms of our program(s) where discretionary pay out of awards is reflecting components such as performance of the company and the employee.
