Job summary

ADM is seeking an Engineering Manager for our Decatur, IL site to lead the engineering team in daily problem solving, project development, and technical growth. This exempt, full-time role reports to the Plant Manager and drives safety and process improvements.

The candidate will oversee a diverse team, coordinate with Technology Engineering, and manage capital projects up to 5M USD, with opportunities to lead larger initiatives. Background in food/chemical processing is valued.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 7 years in process/project engineering with process optimization.
  • Experience managing projects up to $5M USD.
  • Knowledge of process safety and PSM programs is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the site engineering team across process, project, construction roles.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring and development for engineers.
  • Drive process safety and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Set goals, KPIs, and manage project cadences.
  • Collaborate with Technology Engineering on process optimization.
  • Manage capital projects up to 5M USD and oversee larger >5M with Capex team.
  • Support plant operations in solving technical problems.
  • Lead FEL process for applicable projects.

Job description

Engineer Manager - Decatur, IL

This is a full-time, exempt level position.

The Engineering Manager will lead the site's engineering team in day-to-day process problem solving, project development, project execution, and technical development of the site's engineers. The role will be a part of the leadership team within the Complex and will report to the Plant Manager.

Essential Job Functions
  • Lead the site engineering team, which consists of process engineers, project engineers, construction managers, CAD operator, and one administrative professional.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and development for plant process and project engineers through a variety of methods including coaching, collaboration, and conducting training sessions.
  • Display a dedication to lead, develop, support safety efforts, and promote a safety culture of continuous improvement. Promote continuous process safety improvement with knowledge of PSM programs a plus.
  • Utilize Performance Excellence methods to establish goals, objectives, and KPIs for the plant engineering team. Leverage deployment plans to establish an expected cadence of project completion to which everyone can be held accountable.
  • Collaborate with the Technology Engineering team for development and execution of process optimization projects.
  • Lead efforts to maintain and prioritize the plant project portfolio in cooperation with the Technology Engineering team, Plant Management, Department Superintendents, and Maintenance team of the West Plant facility.
  • Assist plant operations in solving applicable technical problems.
  • Support the location in setting up goals and objectives for each member of the plant engineering team.
  • Work closely with company subject matter experts on the implementation of innovative approaches to plant operation and maintenance.
  • Develop, execute, and manage a portfolio of capital projects up to and including 5M USD.
  • Collaborate with the Capex Engineering team to develop, execute, and manage capital projects that exceed 5M USD.
  • Display a willingness to learn and become a subject matter expert on the FEL (front end loading) process. Ensure that all applicable projects go through the FEL process in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to work with EPCM firms through various stages of project development and execution.
  • Ability to lead contractor teams during project execution phases in a manner the prioritizes both occupational and process safety.
Required Skills
  • Dedication to working safely and to the awareness for the safety of others.
  • Strong knowledge of processes including extraction, refinery, separation techniques, evaporation technologies, distillation processes, pumping systems, and drying unit operations including fluid bed, steam tube rotary and flash drying.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with plant engineers and management.
  • Working knowledge of common process drawings and documentation, such as PIDs and control narratives.
  • Willingness to spend time in plant areas - tolerate extreme temperatures, walk long distances, stand, climb stairs and ladders and move through closed spaces.
  • Ability to work effectively on a team as well as independently while traveling to remote plant locations.
  • High level of motivation and results-oriented way of working.
  • Experience with project management tools.
  • Knowledge of CMMS and enterprise management systems.
Education/Training

Bachelor's Degree in the field of Engineering. Equivalent work related experience will be considered.

Required Experience

Minimum 7 years' experience in process/project engineering capacity with process optimization experience. Project management experience managing projects up to $5M USD.

Desired Experience

Leading candidates will have engineering and/or operations leadership experience in a food, feed processing or chemical continuous manufacturing industry.
