Job summary

HKS, Inc in Dallas, TX is seeking a summer structural engineering intern to support project teams by performing basic tasks under supervision, applying standard techniques, and gaining exposure to building design processes.

You will assist in creating implementation documents, participate in design and construction phases, review code provisions, and learn to use Revit, BIM, and structural software while meeting deadlines and collaborating with the discipline teams.

Qualifications

• Pursuit of professional degree at accredited university for summer intern roles.
• Accredited professional degree in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering or related field.
• FE exam passed or actively pursuing FE certification preferred.
• Typically 0-3 years of experience.

Responsibilities

• Executes structural engineering tasks assigned under general supervision.
• Assists in creation of implementation documents.
• Performs as a team member during design and/or construction phases.
• Assists project team in applying building code provisions.
• Works with interpreting material design standards.
• Maintains awareness of the production schedule for responsible tasks.
• Reviews completed tasks for accuracy and completeness.
• Performs structural CA tasks including submittal review and RFI responses.
• Assists communication with other disciplines to incorporate information.
• Participates in team meetings to discuss project issues and coordination.
• May review project meeting notes and phone conversations.
• Travel may be required.

Overview:

Supports project teams using a wide range of developing professional skills. Performs basic engineering tasks requiring application of standard techniques and knowledge while working with the project team. Shows an interest and dedication in acquiring new skills and greater understanding of job expectations.

Responsibilities:

• Executes the structural engineering tasks assigned or as otherwise directed under general supervision
• Assists in creation of implementation documents
• Performs effectively as a team member during design and/or construction phases
• Assists project team in applying building code provisions
• Works with interpreting material design standards
• Maintains active awareness of the production schedule for responsible task(s)
• Reviews completed tasks at key intervals for accuracy/completeness
• Performs structural CA tasks assigned by senior engineering staff including submittal review and response to project RFI's
• Assists in communicating with other disciplines and project team members to ensure incorporation of information into project requirements
• Participates in team meetings to discuss project issues, coordination with other disciplines and technical issues
• May review project meeting notes and telephone conversations
• Travel may be required

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

• For summer intern roles, pursuit of professional degree at an accredited university is expected.
• Accredited professional degree in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering or related field
• Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam passed or actively pursuing FE certification preferred
• Typically 0-3 years of experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Advanced - expert-level experience, knowledge or skills

Intermediate - experience, knowledge or skills required to produce high-quality solutions or work

Basic - familiar with primary concepts or capabilities and may perform elementary functions depending on role

• Basic knowledge of Revit and BIM required
• Basic knowledge of MS Office Suite required
• Basic ability to learn structural analytical software required
• Basic knowledge of building codes, material design standards, select structural standards, constructability, etc. required
• Basic ability to communicate in a clear, concise and professional manner both verbally and in writing required
• Basic ability to problem solve and collaborate on innovative solutions required
