Job summary

Stanley Black & Decker is seeking an Engineer III, Embedded Software in Towson, MD, offering a hybrid work model. You will design firmware for brushless motors, battery management, and chargers, and lead software verification against stringent performance targets.

The role requires a four-year engineering degree and 3+ years in embedded software. ARM experience is a plus, along with knowledge of microcontroller peripherals and RTOS concepts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (EE/CS/CE) or equivalent required.
  • 3+ years embedded software development experience.
  • Proficiency in C for 8/16/32-bit MCUs; ARM familiarity preferred.
  • Experience with RTOS and real-time concepts.
  • Knowledge of motor control, battery management, or power tool electronics is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop firmware for power tools including motor control and battery management.
  • Implement and validate designs via software development, testing, and simulation.
  • Develop verification/validation procedures with unit and integration tests.
  • Lead cost/performance/quality objectives across electronic subsystems.
  • Translate customer requirements into software specifications and document work.

The Job:

As an Engineer III, Embedded Software , you'll be part of our Engineering team working as a hybrid employee.

  • Design and develop electronic firmware and specifications for power tools, including brushless DC motor controls, Li-Ion battery management systems, and battery chargers.
  • Implement and validate electronic designs through software development, testing, and simulation.
  • Develop software verification and validation procedures using unit and integration tests.
  • Provide leadership in achieving cost, performance, and quality objectives of related electronic systems, components, and sub-assemblies.
  • Develop solutions for electronic system-related issues as an integral member of a larger team.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation for work performed.
  • Translate customer requirements into software specifications.
  • Embrace and contribute to cross-functional teamwork.
  • Travel as needed to interface with overseas electronic contract manufacturers and provide technical direction to support quality electronics assemblies for tool production.
  • Manage multiple unrelated objectives concurrently.
The Person:

  • A BSEE, BSCS, BSCE, or equivalent four-year degree from an accredited computer or electrical engineering college.
  • 3+ years of experience developing embedded software for consumer and/or industrial products.
  • Knowledge of developing embedded software in C for 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit microcontrollers.
  • Experience with ARM architectures is preferred.
  • Experience with assembly language coding is a plus.
  • Understanding of common microcontroller peripherals such as timers, GPIO, watchdog, ADC, UART, and DMA.
  • Strong understanding of embedded software concepts, including real-time processing, process scheduling, cooperative multitasking, interrupt processing, race conditions, and RTOS.
  • Familiarity with closed-loop control and feedback systems, lithium-ion battery-powered systems, and/or common motor-control techniques, including sensored and sensorless trapezoidal control, is a plus.
  • Familiarity with software development processes and controls, including static analysis, distributed version control, unit testing, and bug tracking.
  • Experience with debugging, either with an in-circuit debugger or by other means.
  • The ability to discover and implement creative or innovative ideas and inspire others to do so.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to influence the organization and communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • A high level of integrity in all aspects of work.
  • The ability to accomplish unrelated objectives concurrently.
