Envato is seeking an experienced backend engineer to join the Content Management team, owning features from conversation to production and delivering reliable, well-tested software. You’ll work with AI-assisted tooling while collaborating with senior engineers to improve complex systems that power a global marketplace.
You’ll contribute to a modern stack (Ruby on Rails and cloud native services) and participate in pairing, code reviews, and continual craft improvements in a remote, AI-enabled
You’ve got a few years of engineering experience behind you and you’re already good at what you do. You’re now looking for more in a role than being handed a ticket, expected to ship it and move on.
You want to work alongside people who will make you better. You want to tackle meaningful technical problems and have room to try things. You want to be in a place that takes AI seriously without treating it as a shortcut for good thinking.
That’s what this role is about.
At Envato, we help creative professionals bring their ideas to life through world-class creative assets and AI tools. Behind the scenes, our Content Management team builds the systems that make all of that possible. Content upload, processing, metadata, storage, distribution and the human and AI-assisted review that keeps our marketplace moving.
It is complex, high-impact work and you’ll be right in the middle of it.
You’ll take ownership of features and well defined projects from the first conversation through to production.
You’ll build software that is reliable, well-tested and designed to last, while getting to know the platform and the people who use it. When something breaks, you’ll help understand why, fix it properly and leave the system better than you found it.
You’ll work closely with Lead and Senior Engineers through regular pairing, feedback and problem solving. This is a team that cares about strong engineering craft, but isn’t precious about how things have always been done. If you have a better idea, we want to hear it.
We work AI-first. We use agents to write, test and review code, but we’re still working out the best ways to use them. You’ll have the freedom to experiment, challenge old ways of working and bring ideas that move us forward.
You have experience building software, strong back‑end capability and a real interest in doing the work well. Ruby on Rails would be useful, though experience in a comparable framework matters just as much.
You know the value of clean code, sensible trade-offs and testing, and you’re comfortable getting curious when a production issue needs solving.
You’re interested in using AI in practical ways, but you bring your own judgement rather than blindly accepting the output.
Experience with AWS, Terraform, Docker, Buildkite, Datadog, Rollbar, or content-heavy systems is helpful, but what matters most is your appetite to learn quickly, take ownership and bring more than the expected answer.
We’re a purpose-driven company and we’ve long embraced flexible, inclusive ways of working. We’re proud of the connected culture we’ve built across our global team. Our values: Customer First, Build our Future, Make it Happen and Embrace Diversity guide everything we do, shaping how we work and grow.
We embrace diversity at Envato and want to ensure that everyone who applies for a role with us has an inclusive experience. Hiring for us isn’t a tick box exercise, we want to know what you’re passionate about, what our lived experiences are and what you think you can add to the team. We’re also big believers in using AI, and that includes how we hire. We may use AI tools to help support our recruitment process, but they don’t replace human judgement. Our people always make the final hiring decisions.
