Job summary

American Bureau of Shipping in Virginia Beach seeks a Senior Engineer II to establish policies, supervise design reviews, and manage analysis assignments for major and multi-project work. Due to their complexity and difficulty, these projects require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular engineering or scientific field. Project work and assignments may be broad, requiring ingenuity and cross-functional coordination.

What You Will Do
  • Remains knowledgeable of new scientific methods and developments affecting the technical scope of assigned responsibilities and recommends changes in engineering processes and programs as warranted by such developments.
  • Devises new approaches to problems encountered and recommends changes in methods, procedures, or design where necessary.
  • Monitors the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of action of all assigned projects within the Department.
  • Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of technical responsibility.
  • Participates in the development and/or changes of Rules related to specific marine structures. Advises staff in applying Rules and Regulations within the project groups.
  • Performs engineering reviews and analyses when necessary. Reviews other engineers' work and provides appropriate guidance and training when necessary.
  • Prepares written responses to clients for review by Principal Engineer and/or immediate superior.
  • Maintains liaison with other engineering specialists, internally and externally.
  • Distributes work within an assigned group of engineers to use an individual's capability efficiently and effectively.
  • Monitors the performance, development potential, and training needs of engineers assigned. Keeps Principal Engineer and/or immediate superior informed of manpower needs. Identifies appropriate training programs for developing the potential of subordinates.
  • Assist Principal Engineer and/or immediate superior in developing qualification statements, proposals, bids, and other presentation materials.
  • Promotes ABS Quality System within an assigned group of engineers.
What You Will Need
Education and Experience
  • B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering or other related disciplines; M.S. is preferred.
  • Minimum Fifteen (15) years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society; or three (3) years minimum as a Senior Engineer.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of related technical disciplines.
  • Knowledge of applicable Rules and Regulations and the impact of Rule applications and interpretations.
  • Knowledge of company business policies and procedures.
  • The human relations skills necessary to maintain positive client contacts and provide leadership and
  • Ability to identify, analyze and solve complex or unique engineering problems.
  • Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.
  • Ability to learn the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management System.
Reporting Relationships

This position reports to a Senior or Manager level position or above.
