Job summary

American Bureau of Shipping in Houston, TX, is seeking an Engineer I to support GES with ship structure, stability and load line reviews. You will assist in design reviews, use CAE tools, and contribute to compliance with ABS Rules and government contracts.

The role requires a B.S. in a related field, 0–5 years of experience, exposure to FEM and stability software such as GHS or NAPA, and the ability to obtain a security clearance.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related disciplines.
  • 0–5 years of related engineering experience in shipyards, design offices, or classification contexts.
  • Experience with stability software such as GHS, NAPA, or equivalents.
  • Experience in stability analyses per relevant Rules and Regulations.
  • Exposure to Finite Element Method (course work or supervised research).

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, perform detailed engineering review of ship structural plans and stability analyses for compliance with Rules, Regulations and contracts.
  • Prepare first principle calculations or use computer aided engineering tools to predict structural integrity.
  • Perform classical stress calculations, finite element stress analysis, and fatigue analysis.
  • Use FEMAP for model development and NASTRAN solution.
  • Prepare technical reports and collaborate with engineers to resolve issues.
  • Maintain quality, consistency and timeliness per ABS standards.
  • Implement ABS Quality System requirements after training.

Job Description

ABS Government Engineering Services (GES) is searching for an Engineer I to assist with ship structure, stability and load line reviews. This person will perform engineering design review and analysis assignments normally involving a major project or several smaller less complex projects. These projects by nature of their complexity and difficulty require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular field of engineering or science. Through broader and more technically challenging work assignments, the ideal candidate will develop a thorough understanding of policies, methods and procedures.

Individual will support U.S. government agencies (US Navy, US Military Sealift Command (MSC), US Coast Guard, MARAD, NOAA, etc.) by performing various classification and certification services for surface vessel. Individual will need to be U.S. Citizen. Must have or be able to attain a security clearance.

What You Will Do:

  • Under the supervision of an experienced engineer or engineering manager, performs detailed engineering review of ship structural plans and stability analyses as assigned for compliance with applicable Rules, Regulations and contract commitments.
  • Prepared first principal calculations or using computer aided engineering tools to predict the structural integrity of the vessel.
  • Perform classical stress calculations, finite element stress analysis, and fatigue analysis.
  • Use of finite element modeling techniques, primarily FEMAP for finite element model development and NASTRAN finite element solution.
  • Prepare technical reports and work with other engineers to find resolutions to problems.
  • Maintain the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of action of all assigned projects to ABS standards.
  • Implements and maintains ABS Quality System requirements relative to responsibilities after undergoing ABS Quality System training.
  • Prepared calculations by hand or using computer aided engineering tools to predict the structural integrity of the vessel.
What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

  • B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other related disciplines; an M.S. may be preferred.
  • 0 to 5 years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software; experience in software related to stability such as GHS, NAPA, or other equivalent software required.
  • Demonstrated experience in performing stability analyses in accordance with relevant Rules and Regulations.
  • Exposed to Finite Element Method (course work or supervised research).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of related technical disciplines required.
  • The ability to identify, analyze and propose solutions to problems (i.e., the competence to demonstrate complex problem solving skills).
  • Good command of the English language.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Familiarity with the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems (internal candidates only).
  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.
It Would Be Nice If You Had:

Professional or chartered engineer license.

Reporting Relationships:

The incumbent reports to a senior level engineer or technical manager. This position does not have any direct reports.
