Job summary

The Office of Public Facilities for the City of Virginia Beach is seeking an Engineer II/III to oversee maintenance, repair, and improvement of 186 City facilities. You will manage capital projects, review plans, coordinate with staff and consultants, and provide engineering and project management support for safe city operations.

This role may be filled at Engineer II or Engineer III level depending on licensure, experience, and qualifications.

Job description

The Office of Public Facilities is seeking an Engineer II/III to join our team. This position plays a key role in supporting the maintenance, repair, and improvement of 186 City facilities. The selected candidate will manage a variety of facility-related capital projects, develop and review plans, specifications, and scopes of work, coordinate with staff and consultants, and provide engineering and project management support to ensure the safe and efficient operation of City facilities. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated engineering professional to manage diverse projects that directly support municipal operations and services.

This position may be filled at the Engineer II or Engineer III level, depending on the selected candidate's licensure, experience, and qualifications.

The ideal candidate will have experience managing multiple projects involving the maintenance, repair, renovation, and replacement of municipal facilities, building systems, and equipment. Successful candidates will be self-motivated, highly organized, and possess strong technical, written, and verbal communication skills.

Representative duties include, but are not limited to:

• Manage multiple facility-related projects to ensure successful completion within established scope, schedule, and budget requirements.
• Prepare and review engineering designs, plans, specifications, scopes of work, and contract documents for municipal building projects.
• Administer construction contracts, monitor contractor performance, negotiate change orders, maintain project records, and prepare reports.
• Review and inspect construction activities to ensure materials, equipment, and workmanship comply with approved plans, specifications, and applicable standards.
• Conduct field inspections, interpret contract requirements, and coordinate with City departments, contractors, and consultants to resolve project issues and facilitate construction.
• Develop project cost estimates, monitor expenditures, and prepare and maintain construction schedules.
