RK&K's Water/Wastewater team in Virginia is seeking an Engineer I to contribute to design and project delivery for water and wastewater projects, including distribution systems, pipelines, pump stations, and treatment facilities. You will work under mentorship with experienced project managers in a collaborative environment serving municipal clients.

This entry-level role emphasizes hands-on design, calculations, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams, while developing project management

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or related field.
• 0–2 years in water/wastewater study, design, and construction administration.
• Self-starter with interest in diverse projects and growth.
• Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office; knowledge of AutoCAD/Revit preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepare design calculations, drawings, and specs for water and wastewater systems.
• Conduct technical evaluations to support planning and design.

Job description

Our Water/Wastewater team is looking for an Engineer I to join our team in Roanoke or Blacksburg, Virginia. In this role you will perform design and project delivery for a wide range of water/wastewater projects, including facilities upgrades, water distribution systems, and sewage collection systems. This is an opportunity to work hands‑on with a team of experienced project managers that will provide mentorship and encourage your growth in a truly collaborative environment while supporting our municipal clients.

Essential Functions

• Prepare design calculations, drawings, and specifications for water and wastewater pipelines, pumping stations, and treatment facilities
• Conduct technical evaluations to support planning and design related to water and wastewater systems
• Assist with the preparation and review of technical memoranda, reports, drawings, specifications, and contract documents
• Assist with project management activities for select tasks and develop project management skills for expanded responsibilities
• Support field testing and investigations when required
• Support construction projects with office engineering services (submittal review, contract document interpretation, requests for information, correspondence, change requests, and change orders) when required
• Communicate effectively and coordinate with the project team including other disciplines, such as cost estimators, structural engineers, CAD designers, and others

Required Skills And Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or related engineering field
• Zero to two years of experience in the study, design, and construction administration of water and wastewater facilities and conveyance infrastructure (pipelines, force mains, and pump stations)
• A self-starter, versatile, and interested in working on a variety of projects supporting our Water and Wastewater Group
• A solution minded individual with an appetite for learning and growth
• Excellent technical writing and communication skills required

Preferred Skills And Experience

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite including Word, Outlook, Project, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Excellent organizational and presentation skills
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Revit
