Job summary

The City of Columbus is seeking an entry-level professional engineer to support the Division of Water in planning, designing, and inspecting minor engineering projects. The role involves coordinating with city departments, inspectors, and consultants to ensure compliance with standards.

Under supervision, you will prepare plans, analyze public requests, and perform field surveys while staying current with engineering principles. Ohio PE licensure and a valid driver's license are required.

Qualifications

  • Entry-level professional engineering work under supervision.
  • Requires valid Ohio Professional Engineer license.
  • Strong ability to interpret plans and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Act as engineer-in-charge of small construction and/or maintenance projects.
  • Assigns and evaluates work of staff.
  • Reviewing plans for conformance to standards and policies.
  • Prepare preliminary and final plans and specifications for minor projects.
  • Review and investigate public requests and complaints, and propose corrective actions.
  • Inspect projects to ensure conformance with plans and specs.
  • Liaise with City departments, inspectors, contractors, and consultants.
  • Assist in planning proposals and specs for major projects.
  • Operate mapping and computer software to draw/review maps and plans.
  • Attend meetings with local, state, federal agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Conduct on-site surveys and field inspections when needed.
  • Hires and represents division in various meetings.

Job description

Under general supervision, is responsible for performing entry-level professional engineering work; performs related duties as required.

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

Acts as engineer-in-charge of small construction and/or maintenance projects;

Assigns and evaluates work of professional and technical staff;

Checks work accomplished by subordinates for quality and quantity by using pre-established standards and policies;

Prepares preliminary and final plans and specifications for minor projects; reviews and performs studies or additional research to evaluate engineering solutions;

Reviews and investigates requests and complaints received from the public; recommends corrective measures;

Inspects engineering projects for conformance to plans and specifications;

Serves as liaison to and communicates information with affected groups such as City departments, inspectors, contractors, developers, design consultants, utility companies, or other participants pertaining to specific engineering projects;

Assists in the planning and preparation of proposals and specifications for major engineering projects;

Stays abreast of current engineering principles;

Operates a computer and mapping software to draw and review maps and plans;

May do on-site investigations prior to a project;

May represent the division at meetings with local, state, and federal agencies, regional planning and technical committees, commissioners, citizen groups, engineering groups, and other City departments;

May direct or personally engage in field surveys; makes plan-in-hand inspections of ongoing projects.

Possession of a valid State of Ohio certificate as a registered Professional Engineer.

Specialization in the discipline for which appointment is being made may be required for some positions and will be incorporated in the job postings, as appropriate.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.
