American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) is seeking a Senior Engineer I to lead engineering staff and oversee a mix of major and smaller projects. The role requires applying extensive engineering knowledge, ensuring quality, and coordinating across functions to meet client needs.

The candidate should have a BS in Civil/Marine/Naval Architecture or related field, plus substantial experience, with licensing or ongoing professional credentials considered a plus.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Civil, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or related; MS preferred.
  • 5 years of related experience (new hires) for university grads; 10+ years for experienced engineers; or 2 years as Engineer II.
  • Licenses: seagoing engineering or professional/chartered engineer license (nice to have).
  • Knowledge of ABS Rules, Regulations, and related procedures; strong leadership and communication skills.

Job description

The Senior Engineer I is responsible for the activities related to an assigned organizational element, program, project, or task. Will normally plan, conduct, and supervise engineering design reviews and analysis assignments involving a major project or several smaller or less complex projects. These projects, by nature of their complexity and difficulty, require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in a particular engineering or scientific field. Project work and assignments may be broad, requiring ingenuity and cross-functional coordination.

What You Will Do
  • Provides day-to-day leadership of Engineering staff assigned.
  • Assigns projects to Engineers and monitors the progress of all assigned projects.
  • Ensures the delivery of high-quality service and maintenance of good customer relations.
  • Devises new approaches to problems encountered and makes recommendations for changes in methods, procedures, or design where necessary.
  • Monitors the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of action of all assigned projects.
  • Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of technical responsibility.
  • Performs engineering reviews and analyses when necessary.
  • Reviews other engineers' work and provides appropriate guidance and training when necessary.
  • Participates in the development and changes of Rules.
  • Advises assigned staff in matters related to the application of Rules and Regulations.
  • Prepares written responses to clients in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintains liaison with other engineering specialists internally and externally.
  • Monitors the performance, development potential, and training needs of engineers assigned.
  • Keeps management informed of manpower needs.
  • Develops or assists in the development of qualification statements, proposals, bids, and other presentation materials.
What You Will Need
  • Education and Experience B.S. degree in Civil, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred
  • The following are new hire requirements for university graduates and experienced engineers from the industry:
  • Graduate from University and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience.
  • For those with Machinery backgroundsB.S. degree in Marine, Piping, Fire-Fighting or Mechanical Engineering or other related disciplines
  • At least ten (10) years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or a classification society; or two (2) years as an Engineer II.
  • Seagoing engineering license or professional/chartered engineer license.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Should have advanced practical industry-related experience.
  • Knowledge of related technical disciplines.
  • Knowledge of applicable Rules and Regulations and the impact of Rule applications and interpretations.
  • Knowledge of company business policies and procedures.
  • The human relations skills necessary to maintain positive client contacts and provide leadership and motivation to subordinate staff and peers.
  • Ability to identify, analyze and solve complex or unique engineering problems.
  • Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.
  • It Would Be Nice If You Had Professional or chartered engineer license.
Reporting Relationships

The incumbent Generally reports to a Principal Engineer but may report to others depending on the specific of assignment. This position does not have any direct reports.
