Job summary

Pike Engineering is seeking a Substation Engineer to support a transmission substation design team. You will provide technical guidance on complex engineering challenges for utility substations, BESS, and solar collector projects, ensuring safe, cost-effective design delivery.

Responsibilities include interpreting 500kV designs, coordinating across disciplines, and visiting sites to resolve construction issues. Yearly compensation reflects experience and location in Marietta, GA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering Program or equivalent evaluation.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret physical designs for substations up to 500kV, including layouts and plans.
• Understand installation requirements of high voltage transformers, switches, breakers, PTs, CCVTs and related equipment.
• Perform bus calculations, lightning protection and ground grid design calculations.
• Interpret engineering specifications and implement them on drawings.
• Collaborate across disciplines and liaise with clients and contractors.
• Visit sites to advise on engineering issues and modify designs during construction.
• Provide general project management to coordinate staff and deliver projects efficiently.

Job description

Position Overview: Provide substation physical engineering and technical support to a Transmission Substation engineering and design team for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for projects including a wide range of utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems and solar collector substations.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Ability to read and interpret physical designs for utility stations through 500kV, including substation arrangements, sections, and elevations, foundation and grading plans, lighting plans and details, fence plans and details, grounding plans and details, rigid bus designs, strain bus designs, below grade designs to include duct banks and cable trenches, bus and equipment support structures, as well as a fundamental understating of circuit arrangements into and out of a substation
• Ability to understand the installation requirements of high voltage transformers, group operated disconnect switches, breakers, PTs, CCVTs, line turners, surge arresters, and other equipment within the substation
• Perform bus calculations, lightning protection calculations, and use software for ground grid designs
• Ability to understand basic needs of protection and control and civil/structural discipline as they apply to utility substations
• Ability to interpret written specifications and implement them on engineering drawings
• Collaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines, colleagues, construction contractors, consultants, materials suppliers, and clients
• Visit sites, advise on physical engineering issues, and modify design to solve issues during construction
• Provide general project management capabilities to coordinate staff, assign tasks, and accomplish projects in an efficient manner

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering ProgramORan approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEESORgraduation from a Master’s or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs
• 0 to 2 years’ experience as a practicing engineer
• Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles
