Job summary

NSF is seeking an Engineer I in Engineering/Plastics to design, fabricate fixtures, and maintain lab equipment for plastics testing. You will participate in audits, follow ISO 17025 standards, and support multiple projects within Willow Run.

Strong attention to detail, math and mechanical aptitude are essential, with opportunities to grow into advanced lab roles. Ideal candidates hold a bachelor’s in engineering and can read and follow SOPs, test methods, and safety protocols while working both

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline; ability to read, understand and follow standards, SOPs and test methods.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent mathematical and mechanical aptitude; attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high-level laboratory testing with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain and organize workload to meet due dates.
  • Prepare and record all data per ISO 17025 requirements.
  • Create, review and update SOPs as necessary.
  • Monitor and maintain lab equipment calibrations and needs.

Job Description

As an Engineer I for Engineering/Plastics, you will be responsible for designing, building fixtures, repairing and maintaining Lab equipment, conducting a wide variety of testing on plastics, pipes, fittings and other related plumbing products to specific standards and procedures. In addition, being the technical representative for the HDS/Chlorine Projects, assist on all internal/external audits, and having a firm understanding of all areas within Plastics/Willow Run.

Responsibilities
  • Perform high level laboratory testing with minimal supervision
  • Maintain/organize assigned workload to meet specific due dates
  • Prepare and record all data per ISO 17025 requirements
  • Create, review and update SOPs as necessary
  • Monitor and maintain assigned lab equipment for calibrations and other lab needs
  • Give and receive continuous trainings
  • Cross-train in other lab areas to alleviate the workload when high sample volumes are experienced.
  • Maintain a clean work environment and 6s areas
  • Maintain and Repair Laboratory Equipment
  • Design and Fabricate custom Fixturing to meet Project Demands
  • Assure adherence to all safety/health policies and procedures
  • Be a Technical Representative for all areas in Plastics/Willow Run
  • Respond to internal/external client inquiries
  • Research, create, and develop sampling, templates, and testing requirements for specific standards
  • Assist with internal/external audits
  • Perform other duties as requested
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline
  • Ability to read, understand and follow standards, SOP’s and test methods
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Possess a strong Mathematical aptitude
  • Possess a strong Mechanical aptitude
  • Thorough understanding of data analysis and software
  • Highly motivated in completing assignments correctly and on schedule
  • Great attention to detail
  • Understanding in all areas within Plastics/Willow Run (Certification, Chlorine, HDS, Special Projects)
  • Proficient in NSF Applications (Sample Manager (LIMS), Qualer, Insight, DaCs, Warehouse Manager, Master Control)
  • Proficient in the use of PC/Windows software and Microsoft Office Suites (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to utilize wide range of tools (hand, power, and pneumatic tools)
  • Proficient with measuring instruments (caliper, pi tape, ruler, micrometer, balance)
  • Ability to properly handle/mix chemicals and understand the safety risks of each
  • Organized and able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in an Engineering discipline
  • 3+ years’ Laboratory experience utilizing test s tandards, methods and data analysis software
  • Proficient with laboratory QA/QC programs
  • Experience with internal/external audits
  • Knowledgeable with polymers and plumbing products
Physical Demands
  • Light to heavy physical effort required
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Working with various solvents, acids, and bases as needed
  • Safety glasses and steel toes must always be worn in lab areas.
  • Proper PPE (gloves, hard hats, face shields) needed during specific testing
  • 50% lab work / 50% desk work
