- Assist with ship structure, stability, and load line reviews
- Perform engineering design review and analysis assignments for major or smaller projects
- Support U.S. government agencies, including the U.S. Navy, MSC, U.S. Coast Guard, MARAD, and NOAA, through classification and certification services for surface vessels
- Perform detailed engineering reviews of ship structural plans and stability analyses for compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and contract commitments
- Prepare principal calculations, including hand calculations and computer-aided engineering analyses, to predict vessel structural integrity
- Perform classical stress calculations, finite element stress analysis, and fatigue analysis
- Develop finite element models using FEMAP and solve finite element analyses using NASTRAN
- Prepare technical reports and collaborate with other engineers to resolve problems
- Maintain the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity, and timeliness of assigned projects to ABS standards
- Implement and maintain ABS Quality System requirements after required training
- Report to a senior-level engineer or technical manager; no direct reports
Requirements
- U.S. Citizen
- Must have or be able to attain a security clearance
- B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or another related discipline
- 0 to 5 years of related engineering experience in a shipyard, design/consulting office, shipping/oil company, or classification society
- Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software
- Experience with stability software such as GHS, NAPA, or equivalent required
- Demonstrated experience performing stability analyses in accordance with relevant rules and regulations
- Exposure to the Finite Element Method through coursework or supervised research
- Knowledge of related technical disciplines
- Ability to identify, analyze, and propose solutions to complex problems
- Good command of the English language
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing
- Ability to work well with others
- Ability to obtain working knowledge of ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems
- Candidate must qualify as a U.S. Person or obtain necessary export licenses/authorizations under U.S. export control laws
