Description of Work

This is an entry-level position which serves as an Assistant Resident Engineer in the Kinston Construction Office. The position will assist the Resident Engineer in providing day-to-day management and contract administration of roadway and structure projects constructed by private contractors. The position is also responsible for the supervision of lower-level technicians. Specific duties will include but not be limited to performing project field inspections, preparing monthly/final pay estimates, creating, reviewing, and evaluating supplemental agreements and claims, ensuring compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements, resolving constructability issues, and serving as DOT project representative for formal and informal meetings with contractors, utilities, local officials, media, and the general public. In this position, the selected applicant will be expected to communicate in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing and be able to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment. Experience with computers, electronic tablets, Sharepoint, and HICAMS is preferred. You will be expected to apply Department safety standards and program to operations. You may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic and will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions. Performing moderate physical activity such as walking, climbing, kneeling, and standing is needed for this position. You may need to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required. Safety toe shoes are needed for this position. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle.

Salary Grade and Salary Range

NC16 $57,983 - $101,470

Management Prefers Applicants
  • Experience reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contracts.
  • Experience directing, assisting or training subordinate employees.
  • Experience administering contracts.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering.
  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction inspection, and/or construction surveying.
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
