JOB SUMMARY
This full-time position supports engineering functions in the Village’s Public Works Department and reports to the Engineering Manager. The role involves both office and fieldwork, including plan reviews, plan preparation, construction inspections, project management, and consultant coordination.
ENGINEER I / ENGINEER II
- Engineer I is an entry-level role that assists with engineering tasks such as plan reviews, plan preparation, construction inspections, project management, and consultant coordination for public infrastructure projects. This role provides a great opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in municipal engineering.
- Engineer II is a mid-level, experienced position responsible for managing complex engineering projects, overseeing construction, conducting plan reviews, coordinating with consultants, and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. Engineer II leads municipal projects and provides guidance to junior engineers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

- Able to read and interpret engineering plans, specifications, and technical reports, and report documents.

- Fully utilize the Village GIS system.

- Public speaking and presenting technical information to elected officials, community groups, and stakeholders.
- Grant writing and securing funding for infrastructure and capital improvement projects.
JOB DUTIES/KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage and oversee capital projects, including roadways, utilities, stormwater management, parks, and public infrastructure.
- Review and prepare engineering plans and construction documents for capital improvements projects.
- Perform reviews of private developments and provide engineering input to the Community Development Department.
- Conduct construction inspections and manage contract administration for infrastructure projects.
- Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and public agencies to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
- Assist in the development of long-term Capital Improvement Plans (CIP) and budget preparation.
- Apply for and manage state and federal grants, including preparing necessary documentation.
- Work with residents and businesses to address concerns, provide project updates, and ensure public engagement.
- Maintain accurate project records through GIS and assist with Village mapping efforts.
- Ensure compliance with Village, State, and Federal engineering standards and regulations.
- Participate in meetings and prepare reports related to construction bids and consultant selections.
- Assist in engineering design standards, construction details, and field surveys for municipal projects.
- Prepare engineering plans and specifications for in-house roadway and utility projects.
- Prioritize safety and adhere to company safety policies and procedures.
- Complete all mandatory training as assigned.
EDUCATION /EXPERIENCE /CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSCING
Any equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered. Requirements for Engineer I are required for Engineer II.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program (or ability to obtain prior to employment).
- Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) certification and registration as an Engineering Intern (E.I.) in Illinois by the date of hire.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office, and GIS software is preferred but not required.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain required FEMA NIMS training courses within first six (6) months of hire.
- Prior internships, co-op experience, or municipal engineering exposure is a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited program.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of professional engineering experience, preferably in municipal or public works engineering.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Illinois.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office, and GIS software is required.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain required FEMA NIMS training courses within first six (6) months of hire.
- Experience in stormwater management, roadway design, and utility infrastructure is preferred.

Physical Environment
- Stooping, kneeling, standing, reaching, walking, navigating uneven surfaces, lifting and/or moving (up to 50 pounds), grasping, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, and repetitive motions.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
- Position performs desk work and computer skills requiring manual dexterity.
- Primarily work in an indoor office setting; daily work outdoors in all weather conditions; fumes, odors, gases, chemicals and confined spaces, working in and around mechanical, electrical equipment and machinery and excessive noise.
- Must be able to respond to after-hours call-backs; prepare for and confront emergency conditions as necessary to maintain efficient and effective Village services.
SALARY
- Engineer I: The base salary hiring range for this role is $83,458.00 to $100,149.00 per year. The salary range for the role is $83,458.00 to $116,840.00 per year.
- Engineer II: The base salary hiring range for this role is $96,820.00 to $116,184.00 per year. The salary range for the role is $96,820.00 to $135,548.00 per year.
