Job summary

Richmond County Sheriff's Office is seeking an entry-level Heavy Equipment Operator to operate trucks, dozers, graders and other paving-related machinery safely.

You will perform daily maintenance, assist with inventory, and support roadwork construction and drainage projects on public roadways. Education: High School Diploma or GED; Experience: none required. Certifications may follow with time.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • No prior experience needed.
  • Willing to obtain IMSA Work Zone Safety within 12 months.
  • Willing to obtain Georgia Soil and Erosion Certification IA within 18 months.
  • Must possess a valid state operator/driver's license with good driving history.

Responsibilities

  • Assist operation of heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Support road construction and maintenance on public roadways.
  • Perform daily maintenance checks and clean equipment as scheduled.
  • Maintain inventory and report maintenance needs to supervisor.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Description

This is an entry-level position in its classification. Responsible for operating specialty and heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner. Handling the least complex work activities using heavy equipment which may include trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, snow blowers, and specialty equipment used for paving and surfacing asphalt driveways, such as a walk behind concrete saw, single drum rollers, and other pieces of equipment as assigned. Responsible for cleaning, maintaining, and securing all equipment as directed by legislation, policies and procedures.

  • Assists in the operation of specialty equipment used for paving and surfacing asphalt driveways, walk behind concrete saw, single drum rollers, and other pieces of equipment in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life.
  • Assists in the operation of heavy equipment on public roadways to perform construction/maintenance of road system, drainage system, as well as sidewalk and right-of-way while maintaining proper awareness of one's surroundings.
  • Assists with performing daily maintenance checks. Cleans heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required.
  • Assists with maintaining inventory and advises supervisor of any requirement for maintenance or repairs.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Education : High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Experience : No experience required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Knowledge of truck and equipment safety.
  • Knowledge of road construction and maintenance techniques.
  • Knowledge of equipment cleaning standards and procedures.
  • Knowledge of operation of front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, snow blowers and other specialty equipment used for paving and surfacing asphalt driveways, such as a walk behind concrete saw and single drum rollers.
  • Ability to operate single axle trucks in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Ability to read and write to record pickups and maintain daily records.
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member successfully.
Certification
  • Ability to obtain IMSA Work Zone Safety or Flagging Certification within 12 months of employment.
  • Ability to obtain the Georgia Soil and Erosion Certification IA within 18 months of employment.
Licensing
  • Must possess a valid state operator/driver's license for the type vehicle operated with good driving history.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to such adverse environmental conditions as high pressure gas & water lines, insects, poisonous plants, animals, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents, electric currents, disease, raw sewage, blood, or pathogenic substances.
