  • Maintain vessel cleanliness and perform repairs to preserve the towboat.
  • Adjust, tune, oil, clean, test and repair main propulsion engines and auxiliaries.
  • Stand watch in engine room; be available for multi-shift support as needed.
  • Be prepared for TDY travel up to 75% and living aboard the towboat for extended periods.

Job description

  • Responsible for the continued operation and maintenance of the engine room, making periodic checks of engine room machinery, auxiliary plants, electrical systems, refrigerating, plumbing and heating systems, machinery, auxiliary equipment, and etc.
  • Plans regular work schedule and responds to emergency work requirements and repairs and initiates or participates in review and improvement of work methods.
  • Maintains good housekeeping and general repairs and maintenance aboard the towboats interior and exterior- this includes painting, daily cleaning, and miscellaneous repairs and maintenance to properly preserve and maintain the vessel.
  • Responsible for adjusting, tuning, oiling, cleaning, testing, maintaining and repairing main propulsion engines and auxiliary systems in good working conditions.
  • Troubleshoot problems and diagnose malfunctions; determining the extent of repairs, parts and services required to bring equipment back up to speed in the most efficient time, minimal labor and cost.
  • Stands watch in the engine room while equipment is online and in operation. When work requires multi-shift operations, the incumbent is subject to call on all shifts for technical matters and assistance.

Requirements
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position falls under condition of employment for certain civilian positions identified safety sensitive under the Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration rules on Drug and Alcohol testing.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Approximately 75% of the time may be spent on temporary (TDY) duty away from permanent duty station requiring travel and living aboard the towboat for extended periods of time.
  • Must be willing to obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within two years of employment. (Note: If you currently possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License, a copy must be submitted with this application).
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Position may be designated Mission Essential.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element):
  • Physical Effort: Engineer is required to perform operations and maintenance on all vessel systems. Heavy physical effort will be frequently required. Moderate to heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying and lifting items weighing 50 pounds and occasionally 100 pounds is required. Extended periods of time standing, kneeling, bending and walking on steel decks, working aloft, climbing ladders,and entering small cramped, wet and confined spaces is required.
  • Working Conditions: The majority of work will be performed in areas subject to fumes, high heat, noise and cramped conditions. Work around moving machinery where there is a danger of cuts, bruises and burns and traumatic injuries. Work environment is predominantly on the water and is subject to the hazards of drowning. Some work is performed outside in all types of weather. Incumbent is subject to call at any time to restore navigation channel, locks and dams to operational status.
