Job summary

Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) seeks a Roadway Design Engineer in Baton Rouge to support transportation projects through roadway design, plan preparation, geometric design, engineering estimates, and technical support. Training is provided with opportunities for career progression.

Positions report to the Engineer 6-Road Design Squad Leader; licensure is required, and cross-state licensure may be accepted with Louisiana certification prior to appointment.

• Manages consultant contracts including scopes, hours, fees, progress, and invoices.

DOTD is seeking a Roadway Design Engineer to support transportation projects and programs through roadway design, project development, plan preparation, geometric design, engineering estimates, and technical support for transportation improvement projects. This position supports the development, delivery, maintenance, or improvement of transportation infrastructure by applying engineering principles, conducting technical analysis, coordinating projects, and conducting compliance-related reviews.

No prior engineering experience is required — training is provided, with opportunities for career progression and advancement through the Engineering job series.

Positions are located in Baton Rouge, and report to Engineer 6-Road Design Squad Leader.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering.

Note

Job Duties

Job Duties and Other Information

• Prepares detailed engineering design drawings and cost estimates for the most complex engineering projects including, but not limited to freeways, complex interchanges and innovative intersections, major urban and rural highways, and major bridge replacement projects. These projects include highly detailed designs that attempt to minimize impacts on environmentally sensitive locations and commercial and residential properties.
• Some common tasks include establishing typical sections, setting vertical and horizontal grades.
• The incumbent at this level will independently develop and manage design plans for a roadway construction project from inception to letting.
• Performs as Project Manager on in-house or consultant-designed projects. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and maintaining project scopes; project and plan development schedules and ensuring projects are designed and delivered within the allotted budget.
• Manages consultant contracts by developing project scopes, negotiation of man-hours and fees, establishing contract time requirements, establishing design criteria, monitoring progress for work quality and quantity, reviewing acceptability of plans, and approving invoices for payment.

Career Progression

This position is part of a Career Progression Group and may be filled as Engineer 3, 4, or 5 based on qualifications and agency needs.

Compensation

Engineer 3 – $3,083.20/biweekly

Engineer 4 – $3,529.60/biweekly

Engineer 5 – $3,776.80/biweekly

Additional compensation may be considered impart with extraordinary qualifications in accordance with State Civil Service Rules and DOTD policy.

Appointment Type

This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); Job Appointment (temporary appointment in a classified position for a limit of four years); or by detail to special duty.
