  • Louisiana Professional Engineering licenses are issued by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board (LAPELS).

Responsibilities

  • Assists with bridge and structural design activities for transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Reviews or prepares plans, calculations, specifications, estimates, and structural details.
  • Performs or assists with bridge load ratings, structural evaluations, or bridge preservation activities.
  • Provides technical support related to bridge rehabilitation, replacement, preservation, or new capacity projects.
  • Coordinates with project managers, consultants, districts, construction staff, and other internal or external partners.
  • Reviews bridge-related project documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Supports development or maintenance of design guidance, standards, procedures, or technical documents.
  • Assists with emergency response or technical reviews involving bridge or structural concerns.

DOTD is seeking a Bridge and Structural Design Engineer to support transportation projects and programs through bridge and structural design, bridge preservation, load rating, plan development, and technical support for transportation infrastructure projects. This position supports the development, delivery, maintenance, or improvement of transportation infrastructure by applying engineering principles, conducting technical analysis, coordinating projects, and conducting compliance-related reviews.

Positions are located in East Baton Rouge Parish, and reports to the Engineer 6.

While in an official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Services laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering.

Notes

Applications will be accepted from persons licensed to practice professional engineering in states other than Louisiana. If one of those applicants is selected for the position, he/she will be required to obtain a Louisiana license prior to appointment. Position Specific Details

Career Progression: This position is part of a Career Progression Group and may be filled as an Engineer 3, Engineer 4, or Engineer 5.

Compensation

The following reflects the beginning biweekly salary for each level. A Special Entrance Rate (SER) may apply to qualifying positions.

  • Engineer 3 – SER at $2,671.20 biweekly
  • Engineer 4 – SER at $2,952.00 biweekly
  • Engineer 5 – SER at $3,158.40 biweekly

Additional compensation may be considered impart with extraordinary qualifications in accordance with State Civil Service Rules and DOTD policy.

Appointment Type

This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); Job Appointment (temporary appointment in a classified position for a limit of four years); or by detail to special duty.
