Job summary

Pike Engineering seeks an entry-level Substation Protection & Control Engineer to contribute to design, analysis, and field support for transmission substation projects, battery energy storage, and solar substations.

You will develop protection schemes, assist with SCADA interfaces, perform coordination studies, and collaborate with multi-discipline teams, visiting sites to resolve construction issues.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in ABET-accredited Engineering program or equivalent.
  • 0–2 years of engineering experience.
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

Responsibilities

  • Design protection schemes for substations and transmission lines.
  • Understand and design SCADA communications.
  • Perform coordination, voltage drop, fault current, and insulation coordination studies.
  • Execute calculations and studies per client standards.
  • Interpret specifications and implement on engineering drawings.
  • Review designs for accuracy and customer standards.
  • Visit sites and resolve issues during construction.
  • Collaborate with other design disciplines.

ABET-accredited engineering degree
NCEES evaluation of non-ABET credentials

Job description

Position Overview: Provide substation protection and control design, engineering, technical support, and oversight to a transmission substation engineering and design team for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems for projects including a wide range of utility substation projects, battery energy storage systems and solar collector substations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ability to understand protection and control fundamentals as they apply to utility substation and transmission line equipment
  • Ability to design protection schemes for substation and transmission line equipment, including bus, line, capacitor and transformer protection schemes and associated settings
  • Ability to understand SCADA communication design
  • Quickly develop a basic understanding of protection and control design for utility substation and transmission line equipment facilities through 500kV, including one lines, three lines, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, settings, relays, and SCADA
  • Ability to perform studies and create reports for coordination, voltage drop, fault current, and insulation coordination
  • Ability to perform calculations and studies using client specified software and standards
  • Ability to interpret written specifications and implement them on engineering drawings
  • Ability to check designs for accuracy, appearance, and adherence to customer standards
  • Collaborate, communicate, and liaise effectively with other design disciplines
  • Visit sites, advise on P&C engineering issues, and modify design to solve issues during construction

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an EAC/ABET accredited Engineering ProgramORan approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEESORgraduation from a Master’s or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with EAC/ABET accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs
  • 0 to 2 years’ experience as a practicing engineer
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles
