Job summary

Thornton Academy is seeking substitute teachers to support learning in the absence of regular instructors. You will deliver instruction, manage student behavior, and uphold school policies during assignments.

The role requires strong communication with staff and quick, calm judgment in emergencies. Two-step pay scales apply ($125/day; $135/day with active Maine teaching certification). No benefits accompany substitute teaching.

Qualifications

• Minimum of two years of college completed (bachelor's degree preferred).
• Prior teaching and/or substitute experience preferred.
• Proof of active criminal history records check (CHRC) certificate

Responsibilities

• Give instruction and manage student behavior in the absence of a regular teacher.
• Establish respectful relationships with students quickly.
• Maintain a professional attitude with students, faculty, and parents.
• Communicate well with other personnel and faculty, sharing concerns with administration promptly.
• Seek help from deans, counselors, and/or administrators as needed.
• Complete required online trainings (e.g., mandatory reporting).
• Respond calmly and with good judgment in school emergencies.
• Become familiar with the Substitute Handbook.
