Job summary

Purdue University is seeking a Commissioning Technician to perform building and system commissioning across campus, including retrofits, ongoing work, and new construction. You will inspect HVAC and electrical systems, utilize BAS software, and collaborate with internal teams and external consultants to ensure proper operation.

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 4+ years of HVAC experience in university/industrial setting.
• Knowledge of electrical control systems and HVAC components.
• Completion of Indoor Air Quality Apprenticeship modules 5 and 6 preferred.

Responsibilities

• Commission building and system operations for retro, ongoing, and new construction projects.
• Inspect and evaluate mechanical/electrical systems and overall BAS operations.
• Test systems, adjust controls, and diagnose issues with commissioning equipment.
• Collaborate with external consultants and Purdue teams to install and troubleshoot mechanical systems.

Job description

Perform building and system commissioning (retro, ongoing, and new construction) activities, including the inspection and evaluation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment on campus. Inspect and evaluate each mechanical and electrical system within the building, as well as the overall operation of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment in conjunction with all other energy-consuming utilities within the building envelope. Utilize building automation system (BAS) software, computers, meters, monitoring devices, and measurement equipment to properly identify and diagnose problems. Establish appropriate safety precautions, instruments, and measurement methods necessary to perform commissioning activities. Test systems and adjust controls to ensure systems are functioning properly. Work with outside commissioning consultants and support Central Shops, Zones, Engineering, Utilities, and Construction teams in the installation and troubleshooting of mechanical systems.

The targeted rate for this position is $34.34 per hour, plus benefits. The hiring supervisor will determine the final salary based on the successful candidate’s education and experience.

What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience
Qualified Candidates Will Need:

• High School Diploma/GED
• 4+ years of experience with heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems in a University or industrial setting
• Knowledge of electrical control systems; heating, venting and air conditioning units; fan coil units; chilled water and steam distribution equipment; fume hoods and both mechanical/direct digital controls and pneumatics
• Ability to successfully complete module five and six of the Indoor Air Quality Apprenticeship program.

Skills Needed:

• Good oral and written communication skills and mechanical aptitude
• Must proficiently use word processor and spreadsheet programs
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and interpret technical material
• Use various formulas to calculate proper system settings as needed
• Ability to read and interpret various types of blueprints and control schematics
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical prints along with interpreting sequence of operation
• Must be able to lift and carry 10-25 lbs. frequently, and up to 40 lbs. or more occasionally
• Exposed to adverse conditions such as electrical hazards, extreme cold and heat, confined spaces and working from heights
• Personal protective equipment required during specific operations
• Valid Driver’s License required
