This role is ideal for a mechanical engineer with experience in whole-building energy modeling, HVAC system analysis, and energy-code compliance. The successful candidate will independently develop and analyze building energy models while working under the technical guidance of senior engineers and project managers. The position will support HVAC design calculations, sustainable building design, energy-code compliance, life-cycle cost analysis, and high-performance building projects. The successful candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, contribute to client deliverables, and provide technical support to team.

Key Responsibilities

Develop proposed and baseline whole-building energy models and perform HVAC system analyses using IES VE. Review architectural and engineering documents to establish building geometry, envelope assemblies, internal loads, operating schedules, and HVAC system inputs. Evaluate energy conservation measures, recommend energy-performance improvements, and perform life-cycle cost analyses of proposed alternatives. Perform daylighting, thermal comfort, ventilation, and airflow analyses, as required. Prepare energy-code compliance models and documentation in accordance with ASHRAE 90.1, LEED, and applicable local and state requirements. Review simulation results, troubleshoot energy model issues, and perform quality-control checks on technical deliverables. Prepare technical reports, compliance forms, calculation packages, and presentations, and communicate findings to project teams and external stakeholders. Work independently while coordinating with 2 other disciplines and staying current with energy codes, building technologies, electrification, decarbonization strategies, and industry best practices.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution. Three years of relevant experience in building energy modeling, HVAC design, building-performance analysis, or energy-code compliance. Professional experience using IES VE to develop and analyze whole-building energy models. Experience with energy compliance modeling under ASHRAE 90.1, LEED, and applicable energy codes. Working knowledge of HVAC system design, load calculations, equipment selection, and equipment sizing. Understanding of psychrometrics, heat transfer, building physics, and building-envelope performance. Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, and other technical documentation. Expertise in technical writing, including the ability to prepare clear technical reports, calculations, modeling narratives, and compliance documentation. Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and multidisciplinary coordination skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
