Job summary

Roger Williams University seeks a qualified professional for the Energy Management/Controls Technician role. You will monitor and control campus HVAC via EMS, review system performance, and implement maintenance and upgrades.

The position emphasizes energy efficiency, problem solving, and documentation across facilities. Responsibilities include programming EMS to reduce consumption, maintaining drawings and software, and coordinating with the supervisor to guide apprentices and journeymen

Qualifications

  • Experience with commissioning and programming digital controls.
  • Ability to interpret building drawings and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Review operation of Energy Management System computers and HVAC schedules.
  • Take corrective action on energy-related issues across the campus.
  • Maintain and test EMS control equipment; repair and calibration as needed.
  • Write programs to minimize energy consumption under supervision.
  • Maintain records for preventive maintenance and upgrade building documentation.

To review on a daily basis the operation of the Energy Management System computers to maintain appropriate HVAC and other energy control operations throughout the University.

Air Quality

Ensures proper building air quality and air balancing to HVAC systems.

Construction Plans

Reviews new construction plans pertaining to HVAC systems and controls.

Corrective Action

Initiates corrective action on received heat/cold ventilation complaints throughout the University.

Installs new control system points and HVAC equipment as specified by the Mechanical & Electrical Supervisor.

Maintenance

Maintains and tests all related Energy Management System and control equipment plus repairs and calibrates as needed.

Operations

Reviews the daily operation of the Energy Management System computers and adjusts building HVAC operating schedules to reflect weekly occupancy variations.

Programming

Assisted by assigned Supervisor, writes computer programs to minimize and document energy consumption.

Record Maintenance

Assists assigned Supervisor to initiate and maintain records for an effective computer generated preventive maintenance program.

System Upgrade

Maintains "as built drawings", updates software and building documentation pertaining to HVAC systems and EMS controls.

Assists assigned Supervisor in projects to upgrade and modify existing building HVAC systems.

Trouble Shooting

Performs and initiates trouble shooting and repair to energy management, digital and pneumatic control systems "points" and data gathering (DDC controls) panels.

Additional Functions

Master Energy Controls Technician may provide direction to Journeymen and Apprentice Energy Controls Technician as it pertains to the specific EMS project. The Journeyman Energy Controls Technician may provide direction to the Apprentice Energy Controls Technician as it pertains to the specific EMS project.

This is a full-time (40-hour) Facilities Management Union position.
$500 signing bonus after a 4-month probationary period is completed

Requirements:

Must have prior ten years' experience in HVAC equipment and controls.

Possess a full knowledge of energy management computer programming with a background in Johnson Controls Metasys or equivalent DDC controls system.

Possesses a working knowledge associated with a Master ECT or electronics, pneumatic and electrical systems.

Must have five (5) years experience commissioning and programming digital controls.

Must hold a current Rhode Island telecommunications/data journeyman license or above.

A current Rhode Island refrigeration and/or Rhode Island pipe fitter journeyman license/certification or Rhode Island journeyman electrician license is preferred.

Must have five (5) years of experience in a commercial/corporate type setting maintaining an Energy Management System.

Must be extremely proficient in interpreting and understanding building drawings and documentation.

Perform any and all tasks required of the position without assistance and in a timely manner.

Must also demonstrate to the reasonable satisfaction of management, the ability to provide expert guidance, direction and remediation to apprentice and/or journeyman Energy Controls Technicians.

At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be accepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
