Job summary

Michigan Medicine seeks a Medical Assistant to support physicians and nurses as part of the endoscopic procedural team in an outpatient setting. You will set up, troubleshoot, assist with, and pre-clean endoscopic accessories and equipment, transcribe patient data into the EMR, and assist with patient transports and post-procedure steps.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant program or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Recent experience in an outpatient setting.
  • Certification as Medical Assistant is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Take vital signs and document in the EMR.
  • Transcribe medical history, meds and allergies in the EMR.
  • Assist patients in pre-procedure preparation and post-procedure cleaning.
  • Transport patients and assist with endoscopy equipment.
  • Perform endoscope pre-cleaning and post-procedure handling.
  • Assist with endoscopic reprocessing and QC checks.
  • Provide airway support and specimen handling as needed.

Job Summary

Provides support to physicians and nurses as part of the endoscopic procedural team. Performs direct and indirect tasks which contribute to quality care for patients undergoing endoscopic procedures. Responsible for setting up, troubleshooting, assisting with, and pre-cleaning any/all endoscopic accessories and equipment. Transcribes patient information into electronic medical record. Assists with patient transports and endoscope reprocessing. To assist physicians and nursing staff in the delivery of patient care while supporting operational functions in the Medical Procedures Center.


Responsibilities


  • Take vital signs, measure patient weights, and document these in the EMR.

  • Transcribe patients medical and surgery history, medications, and allergies in the EMR.

  • Assist patients in preparing for procedure as needed.

  • Make beds, clean rooms, serve as runners for equipment during procedure.

  • Transports patients via wheelchair and stretcher.

  • Properly positions patients pre-and intra-procedure.

  • Select correct procedure endoscope and perform QC check pre-procedure.

  • Enter patient and procedure information into endoscopy report writing software program pre-procedure.

  • Handle and manage procedure accessory equipment, including control of the handle end of endoscopic biopsy forceps, polyp snares, endoscopic clips, and retrieval nets / graspers.

  • Our MAs are much more proficient in these skills than the RNs who instead focus on sedation, patient vital signs, and nursing computer documentation. The endoscopy technician skills are critical to the outcomes of the procedures, both in terms of success and complications.

  • Airway support via head positioning and oropharyngeal suctioning.

  • Proficient detail with procedure specimen management.

  • Immediately post-procedure, perform endoscope pre-cleaning.

  • Expected to know the set up for numerous technical procedures and related equipment and accessories including band ligation, liver biopsy, percutaneous gastrostomy tube placement, and other less common procedures. Becoming proficient with these skill sets often takes a full year.

  • Trouble shoot problems with the endoscopes and needed support equipment including suction machines, CO2 pumps, and water pumps.

  • Perform high level disinfection for endoscope and accessory reprocessing.

  • At UH-MPU, responsibility for on call coverage for Saturday clinic cases.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications


  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant program or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.


Work Schedule

Hours/week: 40 hours/week Shift: Day and evening shift; Monday - Saturday, variable shifts with variable start times and shift lengths. 10-hour position - 4 10-hour shifts per week Flexibility in scheduling is required.


Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.


Background Screening
