Provides nursing care to patients being admitted for endoscopic and ophthalmic procedures as well as following discharge from the endoscopy/ ophthalmology procedure room in either an asleep but arrousable post procedure state or an awake post sedation state through discharge to home. During the admission process the nursing role focuses on assessing, identifying, and solving nursing care and pre-procedure problems. The nurse is responsible for starting and monitoring IVs, administering pre-procedure medications, performing pre-procedure instruction and explanation of the patient’s rights and procedures. During the recovery phase upon discharge from the endoscopy suite/ ophthalmology operating room, the nurse is responsible for monitoring vital signs, providing pain management, providing patient and family education, and ensuring the safety of the patient until discharge into the vehicle of a responsible driver. He/she must facilitate and demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors at all times.
