Job summary

Baton Rouge General Medical Center is seeking an Endoscopy Technician to support the nursing staff and physicians in preparing the patient and Endoscopy Room for diagnostic and interventional procedures. You will assist with patient transport, setup, and procedure support, ensuring infection control and patient safety.

The role requires collaboration with the Endoscopy team and adherence to departmental protocols, with preferred experience in endoscopy or surgical tech and certification

Qualifications

  • Preferred: Prior experience as an Endoscopy Tech or Surgical Tech.
  • Preferred: Endoscopy Technician Certification.

Job Purpose & Mission

Works collaboratively with and under the direct supervision of a registered nurse to participate in the delivery of patient care for the improvement of quality of life for patients and families. Provides assistance to the nursing staff and physicians in preparing the patient and the Endoscopy Room environment for diagnostic and interventional procedures. Job is performed appropriately for the age population served, as defined in the department's scope of service.

Essential Job Functions
  • Assists with the delivery of personalized care for Endoscopy patients.
  • Accountable for delegated patient care in assigned area.
  • Maintains and practices universal precautions and aseptic technique.
  • Performs technical procedures appropriate for patients.
  • Provides assistance with endoscopy procedures according to protocol.
  • Responsible for proper set‑up of the Endoscopy rooms with appropriate equipment and supplies.
  • Cleans equipment as required and follows departmental procedures for proper cleaning.
  • Administers medication that has been approved by the Endoscopy Service that is given during the endoscopy procedure under the direct supervision of the physician performing the procedure.
  • Transports patients to and from Endoscopy Lab when assigned.
  • Provides transport, positioning and turning of patients, utilizing good body mechanics and following department procedures.
  • Transfers patients from bed to stretcher or wheelchair, following proper Infection Control and body mechanic procedures.
  • Properly drapes/covers patients.
  • Transports patient to destination, following all BRGMC rules and regulations.
  • Notifies Endoscopy staff of patient arrival.
  • Cleans stretchers, wheelchairs, etc. according to established Infection Control guidelines.
  • Reports repaid needs to supervisor upon discovery.
  • Returns all equipment to the proper location at the end of a shift.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a clean, orderly, and safe environment.
  • Assists in cleaning assigned Endoscopy areas between cases on a timely basis.
  • Routes all instruments and equipment to the appropriate area for cleaning/processing.
  • Assists in the inventory and orderly storage of supplies.
  • Reports any unsafe conditions to RN in charge immediately upon discovery.
  • Ensures patient safety by maintaining Endoscopy tables and stretchers in low positions, beds locked, side rails up, and properly securing patients on stretchers when transporting.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
  • Experience: Required: None. Preferred: Prior experience as an Endoscopy Tech or Surgical Tech.
  • Education: Required: None. Preferred: High School diploma or GED.
  • Certifications & Licensure: Required: None. Preferred: Endoscopy Technician Certification.
  • Special Skills or Knowledge: Required: None.

HIPAA – Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable HIPAA regulations appropriate to the job position including medical records, patient demographics, lab and radiology results, patient information related to surgery or appointments, quality data, financial information, billing, complaints, location, religious beliefs, and public health records.

Safety – Maintains knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety practices including incident reporting, handling of wastes, sharps and linen, PPE, exposure control plans, hand washing, environment of care, patient identification, medication administration, transport/monitoring, and clinical alarms.
