Job summary

Forsyth County Emergency Services Department (FCES) offers an EMT Recruit School where you can earn NC EMT Certification while employed full time with pay and benefits.

The twelve-week program begins on November 9, 2026, with Monday–Friday schedules and 42 hours per week in class and field work. After certification, recruits will be EMTs with opportunities to advance within FCES.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED.
• Must meet one of the following requirements: TABE, NC DAP, NC RISE, or completion of college-level English and Math with grade C or higher.
• Must have a valid NC driver license.
• Ability to lift over 100lbs occasionally, 50-100lbs frequently or 20-50lbs constantly.
• Must sign EMT Recruit Agreement committing one year of employment after certification.

Responsibilities

• Respond to emergency calls as EMS driver or attendant and transport to facilities.
• Administer medications and procedures approved for EMT-Basic by NC Office of EMS.
• Maintain ambulance, equipment, and supplies in proper working order.
• Participate in ongoing training in EMS ambulance service operation.

Job description

Forsyth County Emergency Services Department (FCES) has an exciting opportunity for motivated applicants to earn an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification by attending EMT Recruit School. This opportunity allows recruits to obtain their EMT certification while employed full time with pay and benefits. The Forsyth County EMT Recruit School is a twelve-week training program beginning on November 9th, 2026, coordinated and instructed by Forsyth County Emergency Services. Recruits will work Monday - Friday in a combination of classroom and field work. Typical hours will be 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM or 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM to total 42 hours a week, while in class. Upon- successful completion, recruits will earn the North Carolina EMT Certification and will be promoted to an EMT position and assigned to EMS Operations to complete the clearance process to operate as an independent EMT. Once completion of the recruit school the EMT will be placed on an operational schedule of 7:00 AM-7:00 PM or 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM with a 48/36 or 36/48 two week rotation schedule.

Upon receipt of the NC EMT certification, recruits will receive a pay increase to $18.49 per hour ($40,382.16 per year). EMTs have multiple career path opportunities within FCES, with the Advanced EMT and EMT Paramedic positions available with additional education.

• Must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Pass Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE)
  • Pass NC Diagnostic Assessment and Placement (NC DAP)
  • Pass NC Reinforced Instruction for Student Excellence (NC RISE)
  • Completion of college level English and Mathematics course with a grade of C or higher. Remedial courses will not meet this requirement. Official transcripts must be sent to Forsyth County EMS Training Division to verify course completion.

• Applicants will be required to sign an EMT Recruit Agreement that stipulates one year of employment with FCES after obtaining the NC EMT Certification.

• Responding to emergency calls as an EMS driver or attendant, performing necessary rescue work, administering necessary emergency medical care, and transporting persons to appropriate medical facilities.
• Administering medications and performing medical procedures that have been approved for EMT- Basic by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Service.
• Must maintain ambulance, equipment, and supplies to ensure they are in proper working order.
• Participates in a continuous training program in technical medical work and in EMS ambulance service operation.
• Gives talks on emergency medical services at schools.
• Conduct tours of the station as requested.
• Cleans ambulances and stations.
• Studies street and road patterns of the County.
• Performs related work as necessary.
• Maintaining a specific license such as a driver's license in good standing, without a lapse or loss of a privilege to drive compliance with North Carolina law, and in compliance with applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers is required to perform the duties assigned to the position.
