Eugene Springfield Fire is recruiting full-time Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)/Paramedic Single-Role and full-time limited duration and part-time temporary, licensed Basic Life Support (BLS)Technicians.

The Single Role EMTfunctions in support of the lead medic on an Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance and is responsible for performing skilled basic life support medical care, including the pre-hospital care, assessment, preparation and transportation of sick and/or injured patients. The Single Role EMT performs all work consistent with the EMT-B/A certification level as specified by established State of Oregon Scope of Practice.

The Single Role Paramedicfunctions as lead medic on an ambulance and provides field training oversight to other Paramedics or EMT's. This position is responsible for performing skilled ALS medical care, including the pre-hospital care, assessment, preparation and transportation of sick and/or injured patients. The Single Role Paramedic (ALS) performs all work consistent with the EMT-Paramedic certification level as specified by established State of Oregon Scope of Practice.

The Basic Life Support Technician (BLS Tech) is responsible for the pre-hospital care, packaging and transportation of sick and/or injured patients, primarily on code 1 scene calls within the Eugene/Springfield area. Work is performed within the scope of an Emergency Medical Technician- Basic (EMT). This is a great opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and familiarity of the Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) Department. You will also gain experience that will be beneficial should you have a desire to gain regular employment in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and/or Fire services, including ESF.

EMT Single Role - Salary Range:
$20.30 - $27.16 hourly (effective 7/1/2025). Earning Potential: $54,891.20 - $73,440.64 annually. Earning potential is based on a regularly scheduled 48-hour average workweek where all hours worked over 40 in a workweek are paid at 1.5 X the regular hourly rate. This position is paid on an hourly basis; the hourly pay range is $20.30-27.16 The annual earning potential listed is based on working 48 hours, on average, per workweek over the span of 52 weeks. The position is eligible for overtime opportunities above the regularly scheduled earning potential reported.
Paramedic Single Role- Salary Range:$25.59 - $34.27 hourly (effective 7/1/2025). Earning Potential: $69,195.36 - $92,666.08 annually. Earning potential is based on a regularly scheduled 48 hour average workweek where all hours worked over 40 in a workweek are paid at 1.5 X the regular hourly rate. This position is paid on an hourly basis; the hourly pay range is $25.59-34.27. The annual earning potential listed is based on working 48 hours, on average, per workweek over the span of 52 weeks. Basic Life Support Technician Salary Range*:
$18.89--$21.23 Hourly
All Basic Life Support Technicians start at $18.89
*Thissalary range will have a cost of living increase of 2.7% effective 7/1/2025.The City of Eugene and Springfield determine starting pay within the range based on relevant education and experience as provided by the applicant in their application materials. This process is consistent with the Oregon Equal Pay Act (OEPA). For Basic Life Support Technicians, starting pay is step 1 of the salary range and for the EMT Single Role positions, the starting pay is step 3 of the salary range or higher based on work experience.

BLS Techs are Non-Represented, Limited Duration and Temporary positions with the City of Eugene. Limited Duration position could last up to 24 months per business need. If you are a current Limited Duration employee, you will not have rights back to your Limited Duration position. Limited Duration employees are at-will and do not have a probationary period.

Work Location:Station assignment can vary between Eugene and Springfield stations

Benefits: A full range of benefits, including holidays, vacation, personal leave, sick leave, retirement benefit, life insurance, and health, dental, and vision benefits are available. Once PERS eligible, the employee's contribution of 6% is withheld from the employee's paycheck and sent by the City to PERS on the employee's behalf.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in a fire station setting, and inside and outside in medical emergency environments with exposure to all weather conditions. May be exposed to noise, dust, traffic, slippery surfaces, fumes, smoke, flames, chemicals, biohazards, and hostile and combative patients. Employees carry and use a variety of medical emergency equipment, gurney and various EMS apparatus. ?Physical demands of the work include use of legs, arms, and hands to walk, run, jump, lift, crouch, and kneel, often for extended periods of time without meals and breaks. Senses of sight/hearing/smell/touch are necessary to help determine nature of emergency. At times, work will be both physically and mentally demanding, including emotionally disturbing scenes, including traumatic injuries and people suffering from disease and illness. Required to frequently lift and carry 1 to 75 pounds. ?Required to occasionally lift and carry 100+ pounds.

Bilingual Pay Benefit for EMT/Paramedic Single Role
Per the IAFF Contract, the City shall pay an employee equal to 5% of the base rate on base hours excluding overtime. To qualify for bilingual pay, the employee must have demonstrated fluency in the required language and successfully pass a fluency examination administered by the City's Employee Resource Center Division.

Bilingual Pay Benefit for Limited Duration BLS Tech
This benefit compensates non-represented employees up to 5% of their base salary. To qualify for bilingual pay, the employee must demonstrate fluency in an eligible language and pass a language proficiency test that is administrated by the City’s Employee Resource Center division.

Eligibility List
This posting may also be used to establish an eligibility list of applicants for future vacancies. Candidates that are placed on the eligibility list will be notified via email which will include the duration of the list and how notification of call up will occur.

What to Expect from our Selection Process
Applicants are screened based upon their relevant knowledge, abilities, skills, experience, and training. The selection process varies according to the position and can include such things as screening of supplemental questionnaires, written or skill tests, ability or fitness tests, interviews, and assessment processes. In addition, background investigations and records checks may be required.

Candidates must pass a complete pre-employment physical examination prior to receiving a final offer of employment. The examination and drug test will be conducted by the City’s contracted physician and paid for by the hiring department. Candidates who receive a positive drug test will be disqualified.

Hiring Process Timeline*
  • Application Screening: May 26-29, 2025. Applications will be reviewed to determine which candidates will be invited to the interview process. This includes an evaluation of the supplemental questions included in the application.
  • Interview Process: June 16-20, 2025. The interview process may include job-simulation and/or physical ability practical(s), along with an interview designed to elicit an applicant's relevant skills and abilities for the job.
  • Background Investigation: tentatively planned for June 30-July 28, 2025
  • Psychological Testing and Physical Exams: August 18-29, 2025
  • License verification: Must have Oregon EMT or Oregon Paramedic license by September 8, 2025
  • Job Offers: September 15-19, 2025. At time of job offer, finalists will be offered positions based on qualifications, selection and interview ranking, and availability of positions
  • HIRE DATE: The hire date is planned for October 6, 2025
