Job summary

Dinwiddie County is seeking an EMS Paramedic to perform advanced life support on emergency calls, transport patients, and maintain detailed records in a fast-paced environment.

Under EMS Captain or designee supervision, you will work a minimum of hours per month, participate in ongoing training, and must hold Virginia Paramedic certification along with EVOC I & II, CPR/ACLS/PALS, and NIMS training. This role includes lifting and field duties typical for EMS responders.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of emergency medical experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Special Certifications and Licenses: Commonwealth of Virginia Paramedic; EVOC I & II; CPR, ACLS and PALS; NIMS 100, 200, 700 & 800; valid state driver’s license with acceptable driving history; maintain certifications during employment.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to both basic and advanced emergency medical calls.
  • Operates equipment and transports patients to definitive care facilities.
  • Provides advanced emergency medical care per protocol and physician instructions.
  • Maintains accurate prehospital patient care reports.
  • Checks and restocks ambulance with proper equipment and supplies.

The purpose of this job is to perform advanced life support responding to emergency calls, providing emergency medical services and transportation, preparing and maintaining detailed records.

This position works under supervision of EMS Captain or designee.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responds to both basic and advanced emergency medical calls.
  • Operates equipment and transports patients to definitive care facilities.
  • Provides advanced emergency medical care in accordance with established protocol, guidelines, written or verbal instructions from physicians.
  • Observes patient responses; identifies diagnostic signs which may require communications with medical facility for advice and direction administers medications and treatment as instructed by physicians.
  • Maintains accurate and complete prehospital patient care reports.
  • Checks and restocks the ambulance for proper equipment and supplies.
  • Performs general maintenance work and upkeep on vehicles, apparatus, equipment, station and grounds.
  • Participates in continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled classes.
  • Must work a minimum of 48 hours per month with a maximum of 112 hours per month.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college.

Experience: Three (3) years of emergency medical experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Special Certifications and Licenses

  • Possession of Commonwealth of Virginia Paramedic.
  • Possession of EVOC I & II certifications.
  • Possession of CPR, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
  • Completion of NIMS 100, 200, 700 & 800.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Must maintain certifications during duration of employment.

Physical Demands

Medium Work – Involves lifting more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying objects weighting up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment (Unavoidable Hazards)

Involves exposure to biohazards, blood borne pathogens, chemical, environmental, and other unknown hazards.
