Position Summary
Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking an experienced and compassionate EMT: Paramedic to join our Emergency Medical Services team.
The Paramedic provides advanced pre-hospital patient care within the EMT-P scope of practice and serves as the ALS Lead during emergency responses. In this role, the Paramedic is responsible for the overall coordination and delivery of patient care, including care provided by EMT-B and EMT-IV partners, coordination of other responders on scene, and the safe and effective operation of the ambulance.

Key Responsibilities
Advanced Life Support & Patient Care
- Provide direct advanced life support care within the Paramedic scope of practice
- Serve as the ALS Lead and assume responsibility for overall patient care during emergency responses
- Oversee patient care provided by EMT-B and EMT-IV partners
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments, triage, treatment, and ongoing reassessment
- Assess and reassess pain and utilize appropriate pain management techniques
- Administer medications, IV fluids, and other treatments within established protocols
- Make sound clinical decisions in rapidly changing and high-stress situations
- Address the psychosocial needs of patients and families while providing culturally responsive care
- Provide care in a manner that promotes patient safety and minimizes the likelihood of treatment errors
Scene Leadership & Coordination
- Coordinate patient care and the activities of other responders on scene
- Function effectively in a team lead role
- Communicate clearly with EMS partners, receiving facilities, providers, dispatch, fire agencies, law enforcement, and other responders
- Maintain situational awareness and adapt quickly as patient or scene conditions change
- Understand and appropriately utilize the EMS chain of command
- Apply critical thinking and sound professional judgment in complex situations
- Understand the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the role of EMS in large-scale exercises and real-world incidents
Ambulance & Equipment Operations
- Verify that the assigned ambulance is mechanically sound and properly equipped at the beginning of each shift
- Operate ambulances and other EMS vehicles safely and responsibly
- Operate medical equipment safely and correctly
- Maintain familiarity with medications, IV fluids, equipment, and treatment protocols
- Identify and communicate vehicle, equipment, supply, and safety concerns
- Maintain operational readiness throughout the shift
Documentation & Quality
- Complete patient care documentation accurately and in accordance with current standards and policies
- Complete required documentation within the assigned shift
- Participate in EMS quality assurance and performance improvement activitiesAccept and apply feedback from QA to continually improve clinical practice
- Maintain all required licensure, certifications, continuing education, and competencies
- Follow PSMC policies, EMS protocols, procedures, and operational expectations
Team Development & Station Responsibilities
- Assist with orientation and training of new EMS staff members
- Provide training to staff as requested
- Participate in departmental training, continuing education, and emergency preparedness activities
- Participate in assigned station duties and chores
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe EMS living and working quarters
- Follow established expectations for shared EMS living quarters
- Participate in departmental inventory and other operational activities as assigned
Qualifications: Education & Training
- Successful completion of the EMT-P national standard curriculum required
Experience
- Experience working as an EMT-P required
- Operational experience providing emergency care to sick and injured patients strongly preferred
- Knowledge of clinical scope-of-practice skills, critical thinking, and ALS pre-hospital patient care required
- Experience providing pre-hospital care in dynamic environments requiring adaptability, situational awareness, and strong critical thinking skills strongly preferred
Licensure & Certifications
- Current Colorado EMT-P certification required
- Current AHA BLS certification for Healthcare Providers required
- Current ACLS certification required, or successful completion of the next available course within three (3) months of hire
- Current PALS certification required, or successful completion of the next available course within three (3) months of hire
- Must successfully complete a Fitness for Duty evaluation
- Must remain insurable under PSMC's automobile insurance requirements and maintain an acceptable driving record

Physical & Work Environment Requirements
This is a physically demanding emergency response position. The job description classifies the position as Very Heavy Work and includes lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, kneeling, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and other physical activities associated with emergency medical care and patient movement.
Work may be performed outdoors and in uncontrolled emergency environments with exposure to inclement weather, roadway hazards, blood and bodily fluids, communicable diseases, hazardous materials, equipment hazards, and potentially challenging or physically aggressive situations.

Schedule, Hours & Overtime
PSMC EMS employees are generally scheduled in 24- to 48-hour shift tours, following the traditional public safety 48/96 shift schedule model for most of our operations.
EMS employees scheduled for a minimum of 24 consecutive hours are paid their regular wage for hours worked up to 40 hours in a single workweek, with time and a half applied for hours worked beyond 40 in that week.
When scheduled for a shift of 24 hours or more, EMS employees do not receive time and a half after 12 hours of work in a single day.
Occasionally, EMS employees are scheduled for shifts shorter than 24 hours to help during high-volume periods. In these cases, employees receive time and a half for hours worked beyond 12 hours in a single day.
Compensation & Benefits
Base Compensation Range: $24.62 - $30.78 hourly
For EMS positions: Compensation is subject to specific overtime rules in accordance with Colorado labor law and PSMC’s Payroll and Timekeeping Policy. EMS employees scheduled for shifts of 24 consecutive hours or more are paid at the regular base rate for up to 40 hours per workweek; hours worked beyond 40 in the same workweek are paid at 1.5x the base rate. These employees do not qualify for daily overtime after 12 hours due to the medical transportation exemption. For EMS shifts under 24 hours, time-and-a-half is paid for any hours worked beyond 12 in a single day.
