Job summary

J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond, VA seeks an EMS Faculty member to teach EMS and Fire Science courses in classroom, online, and laboratory settings.

The role includes supervising clinical rotations and maintaining a 15-credit load per semester, with summer opportunities based on program needs. The successful candidate will plan, deliver, and evaluate instruction, support student learning, and devote at least 10 engagement hours weekly including advising.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or higher in Emergency Medical Services, Health Education, Public Safety, Allied Health, Education, or a closely related field.
• Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Paramedic certification and/or Virginia Paramedic certification.
• Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification.
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Paramedic.
• Demonstrated knowledge of EMS education and the ability to teach EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic courses.
• Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Knowledge of current EMS practices, educational methodologies, accreditation requirements, and regulatory standards.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, clinical partners, and community stakeholders.
• Strong organizational, planning, and time-management skills.
• Ability to foster an inclusive, student-centered learning environment that supports student achievement and success.

Responsibilities

Job Description:

Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia’s capital city and five nearby counties. Annually, our four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. The Emergency Medical Services Teaching Faculty member will teach EMS and/or Fire Science-related courses in classroom, online, and laboratory settings and supervise limited clinical rotations as needed. Faculty loads are normally scheduled at an average of 15 credits per semester; however, due to cohort scheduling, this position may have opportunities to teach during the summer semesters based on student interest and program needs. Teaching schedules may include day and evening classes, dual enrollment courses with local high schools, and other instructional assignments as needed to support program operations. The faculty member will collaborate in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of classroom and laboratory instruction; provide related services and support activities that promote student learning and effective educational programming; and maintain a minimum of 10 student engagement hours per week, including advising and collateral duty assignments. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development and collaboration on departmental and interdisciplinary initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

Additional Considerations:

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Emergency Medical Services, Health Education, Public Safety, Education, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
• Master's degree preferred.
• Virginia EMS Education Coordinator endorsement or equivalent credential.
• Current or recent teaching experience in EMS, Fire Science, public safety, or related workforce programs.
• Previous teaching experience in higher education, dual enrollment, K-12, or adult education settings.
• Virginia Department of Fire Programs (VDFP) Fire Instructor I and II certifications.
• Instructor-level certifications in ACLS, PALS, AMLS, EPC, BLS, or similar EMS-related disciplines, or the ability to obtain instructor status within one (1) year of employment.
• Experience using high-fidelity patient simulation equipment and scenario-based instruction.
• Experience with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) and the integration of instructional technology into teaching and learning.
• Experience with curriculum development, course design, student learning outcomes assessment, and continuous program improvement.
• Knowledge of enrollment management, course scheduling, program evaluation, accreditation standards, and student advising.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success.
• Evidence of professional engagement through committee work, institutional service, community partnerships, or interdisciplinary collaboration.
